Our CCA Faculty Is Excited for a New Year!
Welcome our new teachers to the CCA Family!

Michelle Bader - Resource Center
I am so excited about becoming part of the incredible staff at Cornerstone Christian Academy! I have taught Kindergarten for many years as well as 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Education from LeTourneau University and my Master's Degree with a focus on Reading and Literacy from Walden University. Teaching reading is my passion and I am thrilled to help students grow and thrive in this area! My husband Luke and I have 3 kids ages 11, 9, and 7. I love to read, write and speak to groups and share how God has always been faithful to my family through all seasons of life. I am looking forward to a great school year!

  Whitney Freudenburg - 3rd Grade
Miss Freudenburg is thrilled to be teaching third grade at Cornerstone this year.  She has chosen career in education because she believes that this is where she can have the greatest impact in guiding students to follow Jesus and to be positive leaders in this world.  She recently graduated from Multnomah University with her Masters in Teaching, and completed her student teaching at King's Way Christian School and Gilbert Park Elementary School.  Prior to beginning her teacher education, she graduated from George Fox University with a major in youth ministry and a minor in music theatre.  She also worked as a naturalist at Mount Hermon Outdoor Science School in Santa Cruz, California, where she led hikes, science lessons, and team building activities for fifth and sixth grade students.  Her hobbies include singing, playing guitar, hiking, camping, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Yen Lam - Kindergarten
I was born and raised in Vancouver, and I am the third of four children. My parents are both believers and raised me to love Jesus Christ, and I accepted Him as my Savior when I was twelve. In 2004, I graduated from George Fox University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I moved to Illinois in 2005 and graduated from Wheaton College Graduate School in 2006 with a master's degree in Intercultural Studies/TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I was blessed with the chance to live and teach in Chicago at the elementary and middle school level; as well as at the adult education level. Earlier this summer, I moved back to Vancouver with my husband, Andrew, and our 10-month-old daughter, Madison. I met Andrew in Chicago, and we have been married for almost three years. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching cooking shows, baking, and spending time with my family.

Jess Layne - Art
HI, I'm Jess Layne and I'm so excited to be a part of the CCA team this year. I have two sons that attend CCA. Thomas is a 5th grader and Cameron is a 3rd grader. This will be our second year at CCA and we just love it! I have another son Walker who will be attending High school at King's Way as a freshman. I am married to their father, Dan and we have been married for 10 years.  I am currently a student at Multnomah University in their degree completion program for Ministry and Leadership. I also have a background in teaching children in my job at Living Hope Church in our Children's Ministry. I am so very excited to be teaching art to the kids this year. I have a love and passion for art and I try to incorporated it in all area's of my life. I can't wait to create with the kids this year and help them find a love and passion for art as well.  I can't wait to meet the kids. I look forward to meeting some of you parents as volunteers. See you soon, Jess

ELEMENTARY LUNCH CHANGES - This year's lunch and lunch recess have a new look. In an attempt to make us more efficient with our staffing, we will run lunch and lunch recess simultaneously. The schedule below will show how that will work:
 11:10-11:35 - Kinder-2nd grades :  Recess
11:15-11:35 - 3rd-5th grades : Lunch Room
11:40-12:00 - Kinder-2nd grades : Lunch Room
11:40-12:05 - 3rd-5th grades : Recess

Microwaves: This year, due to safety concerns and incidents from past years, we will not have microwave ovens or have hot water dispensers available to the Elementary students. Please send lunch items that DO NOT require heating as heating will not be available.
ELEMENTARY FIELD TRIPS - Field trips are often the most memorable experiences of the school year. Intended for learning, we also hope to keep them safe events for all involved, students and chaperones alike. To do this we have put some very important guideline into place.
Parents, in order to chaperone, you are required to complete a background check through the front office, and provide a current copy of your Washington or Oregon driver's license and auto insurance coverage. These, too, can be taken to either office for copying.
As a school, we will comply with or exceed the state laws regarding children in vehicles. As stated in Washington State Law RCW 46.61.687:
"A child must be restrained in a child restraint system, if the passenger seating position equipped with a safety belt system allows sufficient space for installation, until child is eight years old, UNLESS the child is four feet nine inches or taller."
What does this mean for us? It means that your child MUST be eight years of age or four feet nine inches tall to ride in a vehicle without a child restraint. If your child does not meet the age or height requirements, he or she MUST have a restraint of some kind, or the student will not be permitted to ride in a vehicle to an off-campus event.
Many have asked what they should do if they don't have a restraint system for their child. We have purchased a number of booster-seat restraint systems in the past year for such a situation. They can be obtained in the office before the trip and returned at the end of the trip.
NEW MS LAPTOP CHECKOUT FORM - Parents, your students were issued their laptop computers this week. They all signed our new Laptop Checkout Form in order to receive their computer. We will be discussing this and other important forms/changes during our Parent Night on 9/22. You will receive a copy of their signed form at that time so you won't want to miss the event.
ORGANIZE YOUR LOCKER - Is your MS student looking for sturdy, affordable, adjustable shelving for their locker? Well, Tayah Campbell, an 8th grader here at CCA, has a solution for you! She is fundraising for the 8th Grade DC Trip and would like you to consider her handmade shelves. Please check out her flyer for more info. It's a win/win!
NEED MATH TUTORING? Mr. Smith is offering after school math tutoring again this trimester. If you are interested, please contact him by email for more details and times available.

Middle School Retreat Info
September 16-18
Eagle Fern Camp - Estacada, OR

Our annual Middle School retreat is coming up quickly!  This is such a great time for the students to bond with each other in a way they only could in an atmosphere such as this.

Many parents have volunteered to help - thank you! We will have more detailed information for you soon. In the meantime, if you have not completed a background check lately, please do so and return it to the middle school office ASAP. All chaperons will need this form turned in prior to being approved to attend.

All students will need a signed release form if they want to participate in the zip line at Eagle Fern Camp. Please download the form and bring it to the office as soon as possible.

Finally, we are in need of volunteers to donate/make cupcakes, cookies, and water. You will receive 1 service hour for your help! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Mrs. Thurlow or Mrs. Pesacreta.

Box Tops & Campbell's Labels

Did you know that CCA earns money for each and every Box Top & Campbells Label you clip and turn in? This money has been used for much needed items like PE equipment and Art supplies. Won't you help us? As an added incentive, we have quarterly contests to see which class can bring in the most!  If you have any questions, please email  the PTF at  ptf@ccak12.net. We have a list of eligible products here and here.  Thank you for supporting our school!
Effortless Fundraising Opportunities

Cornerstone has partnered with Fred Meyer and AmazonSmile in an opportunity to raise money. For Fred Meyer shoppers, it's as easy as linking your rewards card. For Amazon.com shoppers, all of the same products, prices, and service that you are accustomed to is accessible through AmazonSmile which donates 0.5% of every purchase to Cornerstone. By taking a few simple steps to enhance the shopping routine you may already have, you aide in raising funds for your school! For more information about the necessary steps to take, see the flyer here.

Health & Wellness

The Wellness Committee has put together a list of excellent websites that provide ideas for school lunch ideas for your children. They also provide ideas for healthy snacks for during the day and for after school. The committee will publish links in each newsletter for your review. We hope that these sites will provide resources that assist in creative lunch ideas, snack ideas, and general good health for the kids of CCA.
Great lunch ideas for your hungry student!
Making lunches can be a challenge in the morning. You're rushing to get the kids ready, trying to get your work things together, and then you realize you need to make lunches! What to do?!
There are a couple simple things we parents can do to make this "Oh, no!" moment a bit less stressful.
  1. Plan ahead: plan your lunches a week in advance. Know what fruits and vegetables you need to get at the store and what they will accompany; a sandwich, a wrap, and so on. If you plan on having a dinner that will have leftovers, use those as the main course of the next day's lunch (NOTE: there will not be access to microwave ovens at the Elementary school).
  2. Talk to your kids. Find out what they like for lunch and talk to them about healthy choices of foods that will give them energy and help them think throughout the day.
  3. Make lunches for the kids (or have the kids make them) the night before. This saves the step in the morning that seems to bring the most stress.
  4. Teach your kids to grab their lunch from the fridge and get it to school. This is the hardest step, so you'll have to remind them each morning for a month or so as you walk out the door.
We have found a few website with ideas and helps to make the lunch process a simple one each day:
