Executive Director's Message
Franco Vaccarino, Principal of UTSC, Karen Aboud, UTSC's first graduate and Georgette Zinaty, Development and Alumni Executive Director at Spring Reunion

When the month of June rolls around I cannot help but think of two things; Spring Reunion and Convocation. The weekend of June 1 and 2 saw a number of UTSC alumni descend on the university campus to enjoy a weekend to rekindle friendships, tell stories and create new and lasting memories. If you were unable to join us this year for Spring Reunion I highly recommend that you attend next year as UTSC celebrates 50 years of higher education.

Vojo Alushaj sits nervously on a leather couch in the Ralph Campbell Lounge. He's a long way away from his native Albania, a country sandwiched between Italy and the Adriatic to the west and Macedonia and Greece to the east. Much of what is happening on this warm spring evening is new to him. He and his wife Eftali left their homeland eight years ago to give their children Erind and Denada an opportunity for a brighter future, a future with the greatest priority being a better education. His son Erind is the recipient of the
Fredrick A. Urquhart Admission Scholarship on this evening and he sits quietly by his father's side soaking up the chatter in the room.

The first schooling Yak Deng ever received took place beneath a tree.

In the forests of what was then southern Sudan, in a time and place ravaged by war, five-year old Deng happened upon a man teaching kids to write the alphabet.

"It was so nice to learn something new," says Deng, recalling the thrill of his first experience with formalized education. Although he didn't know it then, as Deng scribbled English beneath that tree he was forging an escape route for himself, a way out of his war-torn country and into a better future.
