6th June 2014

Greetings!

A river-wide survey of so-called accommodations - which include pontoons, jetties, and moorings - is under way. Owners of such riverside property have to pay for a license but the latest estimate is that 40% - 45% do not.

A recent meeting of the Riverside Users Group heard marinas along the Thames are being targeted by enforcement officers to check on unlicensed boats. In a recent legal opinion obtained by the EA, a barrister has ruled that the existing waterways registration order applies to tributaries, backwaters and marinas as well as the main river.

It looks like the EA is finally getting serious about collecting all the charges to which it is legally entitled!

Best wishes

Derek Jones

It is with great sadness that I have to report that Derek Jones passed away on 28th May. Derek was lock keeper at Brentford Dock for about 10 years before retiring in 2011. He was involved with the BCC for over 20 years and was elected Vice-Commodore in 1999 and served as Commodore in 2001. He then remained on the committee continuously filling the roles of Rear and Vice Commodore, before finally stepping down last year.

As a former professional photographer Derek organised a training programme for club members to improve their photography skills . In 2002 he started the Club's photographic competition, which for many years was the highlight of our annual Christmas party .

Derek and his boat Hebe III undertook many trips up and down river including many lunchtime trips to the Barmy Arms in Twickenham. Last year he took Bramlies all the way up the Thames to Lechlade.

Derek's funeral will be on Monday 16th June at 3.20 pm at Mortlake crematorium, and afterwards at the Brewery Tap.

Trip to the London VTS Crentre at Woolwich

Thanks to Steve for organising the trip to the London VTS. Our group were given a warm welcome by the staff at the VTS who explained their role and showed off the technology at their disposal to track vessels navigating the river.

The next stop was Greenwich Yacht Club to displayed their usual hospitality, laying on a lunchtime BBQ.
