When it comes to education, parents' decision about the timing of their child's entrance into a formal education program (kindergarten) varies. While most children are enrolled into kindergarten between the ages of 4 and 5, an increasing number of parents are postponing this decision. Historically, this 'redshirting' was more specific to July, August, and September babies due to the September 30 cut-off to provide extra time for socio-emotional, intellectual, and physical growth. Today, the indecision for when to begin a child's formal education stems from the lack of confidence in what's best for them. However, we look at how fast and easily preschoolers as young as 1 year old today adapt themselves to new technology and new environments and we see children attending preschool for more than 3 years. This leads to three distinct issues: 1) Are traditional teaching curriculum being updated to keep up with these trends? 2) Are children learning so much in preschool that learning kindergarten materials is boring? 3) Does starting an earlier education actually better prepare a child for success in life? These days, children will be going through the educational institution for an average of 15 to 20 years. In this educational marathon the redshirting doesn't mean anything if you read pros and cons. Parents should better think about how children can develop themselves as a unique individual who at the same time contribute to their community.
