Who do you think is the biggest voting group in this coming election? This summer, the millennial generation born between 1982 and 2000officially became the largest population in the country according to data from the Census Bureau.
We remember that the presidential election of 2008 was the time when historically high number of young voters participated in election. It tells us that they do make a difference, when they vote. Now it's time to think about who they are and how they feel about politics. They are the baby boom echo generation raised by baby boomers. They were raised in a sense of optimism and unbounded possibility. However, reality became a rather difficult place, experiencing 2008 financial crisis that has been mostly recovered but unevenly more than ever before. So the generation's unrealistic expectations became a great source of frustration in time of entering society. Compared to the report of economic recovery, the job market has not opened wide for them yet. Even if having a secure job, the housing market in general soared so high that the relative merits of owning a property have to be considered. With a traditional 10 to 20 percent of downpayment they may have a heavy burden of mortgage and property tax. If they are not able to afford a substantial downpayment, they will be stuck in the state of rental. We live in the wealthiest country in the history of the world. Nevertheless, there is massive injustice in terms of income and wealth inequality. The top one-tenth of 1 percent today in America owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent. At the same time, 58 percent of all new income generated is going to the top 1 percent. How many billionaires are living in this world is not surprising but offensive news for them. Concerning political hot issues like racial justice, immigration and sexual preference, this generation is far more liberal than the country as a whole. What they are really disappointed is a system, so broken, that nobody knows how to fix problems such as an on-going war, illusive prison reform, and elections controlled by few hands. Unless the system is fixed, their future seems to be insecure. I wonder how this coming election will reflect their frustration.
