Searching 'police brutality on blacks,' you get about 807,000 results in Google. Freddie Gray in Baltimore died on April 19, 2015 from his injuries suffered in police custody. Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio, was shot dead at a playground while holding a toy gun. Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, was shot by police. Eric Garner died in a chokehold. In November 2012 Timothy Russel was shot 23 times and Malissa Williams 24 times after they made a wrong turn and sped away from police chase. Recently pulling a gun on a pool party, a police officer threw a bikini-clad 14 year old black girl to the ground in McKinney, Texas...  Assuming that the police are supposed to protect and serve the population, who do you think needs more protection? Poor people in general are more likely to be the victims of crime than anyone else. But American history tells us that the institution of slavery and the control of minorities were two of the more formidable historical features of American society shaping early policing. The slave patrols was first established in the South in 1704 and lasted until 1861. Their role was to catch run away slaves. From that time to the present, the Black community has been a virtual police state. Police violence has been and is a necessary institution of this country to enforce the ongoing resegregation and to intimidate the Black minority from revolting against the racist polices of the government.  The NYT editorial said that the Ferguson case resonated across the country because the killing of young black men by police is a common feature of African-American life and a source of dread for black parents from coast to coast. The report by ProPublica showed that young black males in recent years were at a far greater risk - 21 times greater - of being shot dead by police than young white men. Historically the effective resolution for the tension between these two forces came after the peaceful mass actions, like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington. But the time has changed. As the Ferguson unrest shows, the oppressed starts taking a stride toward justice rather than nonresistance.
