What does eco-friendly mean? In recent years, terms like "going green" and "eco-friendly" have become buzz words on talk shows, commercials and product packaging. To be really eco-friendly, the concept not only contributes to material production but also practices (eco-friendly habits) that help conserve resources and thus minimizing environmental footprint. German chemist Michael Braungart pushes for smarter use of materials through C2C (Cradle to Cradle). C2C emphasizes the importance of a product's life cycle and how to minimize the waste generated by the production process or post-consumption waste-management. This means having products that either naturally degrade as some form of compost or find their way back to the manufacturer as a pure raw material. Imagine, a waste-less economy where "going green" doesn't always equate to drastic change in consumer habits; eco-hedonism is Braungart's creed. However, there are objections. First, how can this new recycling economy be implemented if customers are not required by law to return materials? The concept of a lease could be a solution for this concern. We don't purchase to own, but pay to use a service. Instead of selling a chair, the service of sitting can be bought and returned. The shift from ownership to access can drastically change the human/resource relationship. Second, many business owners are deterred by high initial costs of production. But if manufacturers eventually receive their materials back, it is worth for them to use high-quality materials since companies would turn into reservoirs of raw materials. C2C seems to be a perfect application of environmentalism in the age of access: the new culture of hypercapitalism, where all of life is a paid-for experience.
