On the Israeli side, 53 soldiers have been killed in the fighting as well as two civilians, but more than 100 Palestinians were killed yesterday after Israel intensified its bombardment of Gaza, bringing the number of Palestinians killed to over 1,200. In the late-19th century, persecution of Jews, particularly in Europe, led to the creation of the Zionist movement that aspired the immigration of Jews from the diaspora to the land of Israel. Israeli independence in 1948 became Al-Nakba (Palestinian exodus) for 700,000 Palestinian Arabs who were expelled from their homes. Among them approximately one third of Palestinian refugees live in the West Bank and Gaza as colonial subjects of Israel after the Six-Day War in 1967 when Israel annexed Jerusalem. Issuing tenders for housing units in settlements and East Jerusalem, Israel violates the fourth Geneva Convention that prohibits an occupying power (Israel) from transferring its population into the territories it has seized. While settlers enjoy Israeli citizenship and rule of law, the Palestinians are under harsh military rule. No Palestinian may travel abroad without Israeli approval. The settlers consume about six times more water than the 2.6 million Palestinians. Settler attacks on the Palestinians, which the police often ignore, have steadily increased. It's a historical fact that colonial regimes breed anti-colonial resistance. The dominant power will often provoke the suppressed, or force them to make the first attack, whereby justifying a brutal retaliation, often with an overwhelmingly dominant military force. As shown in past wars, Hamas' rockets are not really weapons of war, but of terror and propaganda. On the other hand, the Israelis have their Iron Dome, a proven short-range missile interceptor, as well as other sophisticated artillery. So, what about a two-state solution? Israel doesn't seem to be interested and would not waive the chance to occupy the territory. Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni Islamic organization, governing the Gaza Strip is adamant and zealous freedom fighter that seemingly prefers to expend its people for the fight. No hope...

Fast-rising mobile technology is making buying stuff with a tap of an app easier than ever, and shifting the way we shop. What were once permanent, brick-and-mortar stores. Leases can last as short as a single day, when brands use the spaces for a promotional event instead of testing out a market. (NPR)

We all know there are only two types of people in the world: cat people and dog people. But data from market research firm Euromonitor suggest that these differences extend beyond individual preferences and to the realm of geopolitics: it turns out there are cat countries and dog countries, too.
