Hyun Gak sunim, a Zen monk, was born in Rahway, New Jersey. Educated at Yale College and Harvard University, he was ordained a monk under Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1992 at Nam Hwa Sah Temple. During his first winter retreat in Korea, he had a weird experience. Walking down the road, he heard an unfamiliar melody that made him cry. When he told his master the story, they determined that in his previous life he was a Korean resistance soldier and died in the battlefield during the Japanese occupation. At the time, he had wished to be born in a strong nation in his next life if he had one. According to him, that was the reason why he was born in the U.S. and became a monk in Korea and he was saddened when he heard that melody - The Korean anthem. I am not a Buddhist. But if the story reflects that there must be a destiny, we somehow could have generously understood the case of Victor Ahn who is a Russian short track speed skating athlete of South Korean descent. Whatever the reason for switching his nationality, it will be a path for his destiny. There are so many Korean immigrants all over the world, who switched their nationality. And the Olympics often become a hot time for immigrants to discuss their identities. If you were an athlete, are you going to represent Korea or the U.S.? I think it is a sign title you can choose for your nationality, if you want, but not your identity. Let's applaud Victor Ahn for his achievement. |
