Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in 1918, the early beginning of Apartheid in South Africa. As a handful of African lawyers, Mandela embraced politics at the African National Congress (ANC). He co-founded the militant in 1961 in association with the South African Communist Party, leading a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government. He was incarcerated for 27 years. After his release on February 11, 1990, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and was elected president in 1994 election. Although he has been praised for his humanity from all over the world today, he used to be a controversial figure in relation to American Conservatives who regarded ANC as a terrorist organization even though lawmakers showed their opposition to the South African regime with the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act. Mandela nevertheless was closely aligned with Marxists around the globe until his death. For this reason he was regarded as too radical for American support. Based on his strong belief Mandela delivered one of the harshest critiques of the U.S. invading Iraq, saying "one power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust." After stepping down from presidency, he initiated the AIDs campaign to save millions of Africans, broke the AIDs-taboo and became a central figure in the African and Global AIDs movement. Nelson Mandela was a truly courageous leader as well as a philanthropist in our time.
