The U.S. government partially shut down for House Republicans continuing to demand that the nation's new health-care law be delayed or repealed. The fact that the shutdown is not about budget deficits but universal health insurance resonates the same happening when the Clinton administration attempted to overhaul the country's healthcare system in the early 1990s. According to the WHO's World Health Report 2000, the U.S. healthcare system came in 15th in performance and first in expenditure. The result meant that its overall ranking was 37th! Nearly 48 million Americans are uninsured and 45,000 Americans die each year because they do not get to a doctor when they should. As you may know, the inefficiency of the U.S. healthcare system is well featured in Michael Moore's 2007 documentary film Sicko where he compares the for-profit, non-universal U.S. system with the non-profit universal health care systems of Canada, UK, France, and Cuba: all socialist countries. Nevertheless, associating the word 'universal' to socialism, many Americans prefer 'Affordable Care Act' to Obamacare, which are exactly the same thing. The cost of health insurance has been skyrocketing every year. 18 percent of Asians were uninsured in 2010, compared to 11.7 percent non-Hispanic whites. Many Korean-Americans have exams done in Korea where quality and affordability exceed standards at home. But preventive care is not the whole reason why we should carry insurance. What about emergency and/or long-term care? Hopefully Obama's Affordable Care Act will be Medicare for all Americans.

Since being passed in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has been a political lightning rod and has been subject to attempts by Republicans to delay and defund it. The law is at the center of the current fight in Congress that could lead to a government shutdown, which would be the first in almost 20 years. (ABC)
