Go Out and Play!

Summer is the time to get outside and play - for both children and adults. There has been a lot of research and information lately about the need to return to more unstructured and imaginative play for children to encourage brain development and creativity. We are learning that increased screen time, inside time, and less active play are having negative impacts for both children and adults.

This year our North Shore Early Years planning table, which includes members from a wide variety of agencies and services, focused on the importance of unstructured and child-directed play. There was a wonderful outdoor play on a rainy Saturday in May and over 300 children participated. Resources are also available that outline facts and actions to support play. I thought this was the perfect time to remind ourselves about our need for play and why.
  • Play helps children do well in school and in the world of work as adults
  • Play teaches children to solve problems
  • Play develops creativity and imagination
  • Play is key to healthy physical development
  • Play reduces stress and anxiety
  • Play encourages independence
  • Play is unstructured and child directed
  • Play in outdoor spaces is healthy and fun
Outside Ideas:
  • Be ready for the rain with waterproof jackets, hoods, and boots
  • Be ready for the sun with hats and sun block
  • Child sized shovels and pails are good for sandboxes, beaches or the garden
  • Go to the park, walk trails, touch trees, look at different plants, play hide and seek
  • Go to the beach and look for driftwood, interesting stones, shells, and seaweed
  • At the playground watch the children explore, connect, run, climb, and dig.
  • Talk about what you see, do, and feel
Enjoy your summer and go out and play!

Articles and ResourcesArticle
The Importance of Imagination

Drawing on her extensive experience in supporting child care providers, Christine Mann, NSCR's Child Care Support & Outreach Consultant, examines the importance of make-believe play in her most recent article.

Christine highlights the importance of imagination in helping children to understand their world, develop relationships, build critical skills, and explore and express their feelings about new concepts.  She also offers suggestions on how parents and child care providers can help facilitate this process.

Preventing Injuries in Children

Preventable injuries harm, disable, or kill tens of thousands of children in Canada every year.  Diane Atkinson, the CAPC Program Coordinator with North Shore Community Resources, has contributed the following statement which highlights
this fantastic resource that has been developed by Parachute Canada to reduce the preventable injuries suffered by children:

I would like to introduce a new Child Injury Prevention website that is available to all those with or working with young children, through Parachute Canada. It includes a wealth of information, including common injury examples, prevention information, additional resources including social determinants of injury etc. Prevention information can be printed for display in child centres and is available is presented in a picture format that is easy to understand even for parents whose English is not a first language. Most importantly the website includes a free on-line Child Injury Prevention Course for staff working in any setting with young children. It takes approximately 2- 4 hours to complete and as it is broken into modules, it does not have to be completed all at once. When completed, the participant will receive a certificate. If you work with young children, I am hoping that you might find this valuable for you or your staff to do.

The Transition to Child Care

The start of child care can be an exciting and challenging time for both parents and their children.  In this article Sue Irwin, the Vancouver Coastal Regional Coordinator for CCRR Programs here at North Shore Community Resources, follows up on her previous article about finding child care and offers tips on how to make the transition to child care as smooth as possible for all involved.

To read Sue's article from the last newsletter on finding a suitable child care provider, please click here.

Communicating with Parents

Effectively communicating with parents is a critical part of working in child care, but it is not always easy.  In this article, NSCR's Sue Irwin provides some suggestions to help child care providers successfully talk to parents about what can sometimes be delicate and emotionally-charged subjects.

Child Care Subsidies

A common question that CCRR staff hear from child care subsidy clients is "how much money can or will I get per month toward my child care fee?"

Unfortunately, we are not qualified to assess your application - the Subsidy Office in Victoria takes into consideration numerous criteria and calculations to evaluate your family's needs.  However, the Ministry of Children and Family Development does provide a Child Care Subsidy Rate Table which is available online or in hard copy form at our Capilano Mall offices.  This chart shows you the maximum amount that you may qualify for.  Our CCRR staff are also available to help you with any questions you may and to provide assistance with the application process.

Summer Activities

Summer is finally here and it's time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine! Christine Mann has put together a list of fun and educational summer activities that parents and child care providers can do with children.
