REGISTER HERE Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) OverviewTuesday, Sept. 30, 2:00-4:30 p.m.Presenter: Ellen Herner, PEARLS Coordinator/Facilitator, Cattaraugus Co. Office for the Aging The Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) is an evidence-based, community-based treatment program to reduce minor depression in physically impaired and socially isolated older people. Ms. Herner will give an overview of how the program works and why it's so successful in rural areas. Hearing Loss in Older PeopleThursday, Nov. 6, 2:00-4:30 p.m.Presenter: Amy Rominger, Au.D, CCC-A, FAAA, Clinical Asst. Professor, Dept. of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Ithaca College This workshop will present the causes and psychosocial impact of hearing loss, as well as the most current diagnostic and remediation strategies used to combat hearing disorders in older people. Practical tips for interacting with people with hearing loss will be incorporated throughout the workshop. Life Review of Generative ContributionsMonday, Dec. 1, 2:00-4:30 p.m.Presenter: Myra Sabir, Ph.D., Asst. Professor, Dept. of Human Development, State University of NY-Binghamton Reminiscence about ways older adults have made significant contributions to society may be one of their most powerful developmental needs. Reminiscence work around generative stories can lead to late-life rebirth, revitalization, and mitigate the fear of death. This workshop will focus on ways to assist older adults in completing a life review of their generative contributions.

The Gerontology Institute and the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center will be offering a series of four workshops on falls prevention this September and October. Health care professionals and interested laypeople will learn about falls as a complex geriatric problem; environmental and contextual factors related to falls; Tai Chi for falls prevention; medication management to reduce falls; and effective assessment, triage, and intervention program design. Attendance at these workshops is free, but registration is required. A fee is charged to obtain CEUs.

Film Screening of CYBER-SENIORS
 The Gerontology Institute, the Department of Aging Studies, and the Department of Occupational Therapy will sponsor a free screening of the humorous and heartwarming documentary CYBER-SENIORS on Wed., Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in 102 Textor Hall on the Ithaca College campus. Whether you're 18 or 80, be prepared to be charmed by this film that chronicles the extraordinary journey of a group of colorful senior citizens and their equally engaging teenage mentors as the seniors discover the Internet through the guidance of their youthful teachers. Join the Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease
Please join the Aging and Gerontologic Education Society (A.G.E.S.) and the Gerontology Institute Team in the Walk to End Alzheimer's, starting at noon on Sunday, September 28, at Cass Park in Ithaca. The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. 2014 Reports Give Status of Social Security and Medicare Programs

Each year the Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds report on the current and projected financial status of the two programs. Neither Medicare nor Social Security can sustain projected long-run program costs in full under currently scheduled financing, and legislative changes are necessary to avoid disruptive consequences for beneficiaries and taxpayers. Director Rhoda Meador to Present Two Sessions on Planning Your Retirement
 ICGI Director Rhoda Meador, Ph.D., will be the opening and closing speaker for Lifelong Transitions, a series of workshops and presentations about retirement at Lifelong, 119 West Court St. in downtown Ithaca. "The most important factor in making the retirement transition exciting and rewarding is the way you think of yourself and your future," Meador said. "By entering this new phase of life with enthusiasm and vision, you can make it a meaningful and satisfying stage of life." Meador will present her two-part workshop, "Envisioning a Fulfilling Retirement," at 3-5 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 10, and on Mon., Oct. 27. Other programs in the series will include downsizing, financial planning, elder law, medicare basics, volunteering, and much more.
