SAVE THE DATE: Mindfulness in Elder Care with Lucia McBee as Distinguished Speaker, February 24, 2014

Lucia McBee, LCSW, MPH, CYI, has worked with elders and their caregivers for over 30 years. She has developed a pioneering practice using mindfulness, and complementary and alternative medicine to improve the quality of life for elders, and those who care for them, in community and nursing home settings.

Her book describing these practices, Mindfulness-Based Elder Care, was published in 2008. Save the date, and watch for more details in upcoming newsletters for this free evening event at Ithaca College's Emerson Suites.

Report on Rural Training Needs Available

The need for training on aging is particularly acute in rural areas, which not only face shortages of health care services and specialists, but also contain higher percentages of older adults than urban areas. With the assistance of the FLGEC, the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute undertook an online survey and stakeholder interviews in 2013 to gauge current interest in gerontology and geriatric training programs among health and social service professionals in rural western and central New York. Secondary goals included identifying stakeholders' perceptions about specific training needs, and building relationships with potential community partners with whom we might collaborate to develop and implement future training. I grabbed hold of Margarita's arm as we embarked on the short journey from the occupational therapy room to the butterfly (mariposa in Spanish) wing of the nursing home. The air was breezy and warm as we made our way down the open hallway. To the right of us were acres and acres of green space, and to the left a beautiful church. Residents speckled the open facility, happily enjoying the tropical environment that was their home. This was Costa Rica, after all: the country of rice, beans, and no worries....continue reading
