Stress and Depression Are Topics of  Workshops in October & November
 
Handling Stress in a Rapidly Changing Environment

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2:00-4:30 p.m.

 

Presenter: Francis Battisti, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, State University of New York Distinguished Service Professor, Broome Community College

 

Questions about the rapidly emerging changes in Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act can cause stress for older people, their caregivers, and the professionals who support them. Noted speaker Francis Battisti, Ph.D., LCSW, BCD, will provide health and aging services practitioners with practical and helpful strategies and tips on how to understand and handle the stress that often comes with change.

 

Behavioral Interventions for Depression in Depression interventions Cognitively Impaired Elders

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2:00-4:30 p.m.

 

Presenter: Cassandra Bransford, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work and Director of Applied Clinical Research, Southern Tier Center on Aging, State University of New York at Binghamton

 

Cassandra Bransford, Ph.D., M.S.W., will share insights from her research on depression in older adults with cognitive impairments. She will examine specific theories of mental health and teach participants how to turn them into practical applications for behavioral interventions in health and human services work settings.

Intergenerational Harvest Moon Dance!

harvest Moon dance 06 If you're an Ithaca College student or an older person, you won't want to miss this entertaining dance! This intergenerational event is put on annually by AGES (Aging & Gerontologic Education Society), Ithaca College's gerontology student club.

Open to the Ithaca-area community, this free event will offer live music by "The Immortal Jellyfish," with three-part harmonies, jazz dance, and some old-time country and modern dance tunes. Refreshments will also be provided. Past dances have brought over 100 older adults to campus, having fun with an equal number of IC students. No registration is required, so we hope to see you there!

20th Annual Conference on Depression: "What We Are Learning About Treatment and Recovery in the 21st Century"

Hal Lasko, Still Painting at 98 Years of Age

Hal Lasko, a one-time graphic artist, is now 98. Thanks to having been introduced to Microsoft Paint a few years ago, he has been avidly painting again despite his macular degeneration. We think you'll find his video inspiring, no matter what age you are!

New Report from AARP about Declines in Availability of Family Caregivers

The AARP Public Policy Institute has released a new report, "The Aging of the Baby Boom and the Growing Care Gap: A Look at Future Declines in the Availability of Family Caregivers." This report provides a national and state-by-state look at the future care gap as the baby boomers age. It also highlights demographic trends that may influence the future supply of family support for the frail older population.
