Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center Receives Federal Grant

The Health Resources and Services Administration has once again funded the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center (FLGEC), of which the Gerontology Institute has been a partner since 1997. The institute will receive $73,254 for FY14, which is year four of a five-year grant period that ends in June 2015.

"We are thrilled at this show of support on the federal level, which allows us to continue to provide training opportunities to health and aging services professionals in 17 rural counties of New York," said Rhoda Meador, institute director.

The University of Rochester Medical Center is the lead institution of the FLGEC grant and its consortium. Consortium members include the ICGI, SUNY Brockport, New York Chiropractic College, and St. John Fisher College, Wegmans School of Pharmacy.

2013 State of Aging report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the latest report in its series, which provides the most current data on 15 key indicators of older adult health at the national and state levels, as well as calls to action, state success stories, and other resources. Its aim is to provide state and local level public health and aging services professionals with the data they need for grant writing, program planning, and priority setting, while also giving suggestions for tools and informational resources that will support using this data for action. National Center for Creative Aging Launches Free Online Training for Artists Who Teach and Work with Adults 55+

Every single day for the next 19 years, 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 years old. As adults move through the aging spectrum, many are looking for arts engagement opportunities in their communities. Despite this demand, many teaching artists are not properly equipped to work with older adults, from actively aging boomers to those with Alzheimer's disease or other cognitive disabilities. To better support these teaching artists, the National Center for Creative Aging (NCC) has launched a first-of-its-kind free online training for teaching artists to learn how to work with older adults utilizing the arts.
