We had an excellent turnout for our Distinguished Speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Perkins--so excellent, that some people were unable to get a seat for her presentation. If you missed her talk or would like to review it, we now have her presentation on deve lopmental disabilities and aging on-line.
Our spring workshop schedule offers three excellent learning opportunities about grief and loss, disaster planning for older adults, and demographics of rural aging in America. We hope you'll sign up for one, two, or all three of them.
If you are a retiree looking for a unique volunteer opportunity, training starts April 5th to become a member of RISE: Retirees in Service to the Environment. And, put on those dancing shoes for Project Generations' Intergenerational Prom on March 25th!
Best wishes,

Rhoda Meador, Director |

Register Now for April Workshops
Grief and Loss When Working with Older People
Wed., April 10, 2:00-4:30 p.m.
Presenter: Kay Viggiani, M.S., RN, CS
Death is a natural progression from life. Most health and human service professionals who serve older people are exposed to both the physical and emotional effects of loss on a daily basis. These workers often experience the same in their personal lives. Most are taught how to provide support to their clients, patients, and families. However, they may fail to recognize their own grieving process. This workshop will help the professional understand and develop coping skills essential for the health and well-being of both the professional and their workplace.
Disaster Planning for Older Adults
Wed., April 17, 2:00-4:30 p.m.
Presenters:
Beth Harrington, Assistant Director for EMS, Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response
Frank Kruppa, Public Health Director, Tompkins County
Lisa Schuhle, Program Manager, Broome County Office for the Aging
Do you know what to do for older adults in times of disaster? This workshop will build the capacity of the aging services network and other community organizations to support older people and their caregivers in the event of a disaster. Lisa Schuhle will share lessons learned from her own community's response to disasters, and Beth Harrington will discuss how best to understand and use the local emergency response network. Topics will include lessons learned from recent disasters, making sure your organization's disaster plan works, and individual emergency preparedness.
Rural Aging in 21st-Century America
Wednesday, April 24, 2:00-4:30 p.m.
Presenters:
Nina Glasgow, Senior Research Associate, Department of Development Sociology, Cornell University
David L. Brown, Chair, Department of Development Sociology, Cornell University
Douglas T. Gurak, Professor, Department of Development Sociology, Cornell University
This workshop will examine the sociological, demographic, and geographic aspects of aging in rural and nonmetropolitan areas of the United States, with a special emphasis on upstate New York. The speakers will share insights from their new book, Rural Aging In 21st Century America (Springer 2013), which addresses population aging, one of the most important trends of the 20th and 21st centuries.
All three workshops will be held at the Country Inn and Suites, on Route 96B just up from the College. To register, click here. |
Retirees in Service to the Environment (RISE)--Trainings Begin April 5
Retirees in Service to the Environment (RISE), a volunteer program at Ithaca College, is seeking local retirees for this comprehensive training program. Trainings will be held Fridays at Longview, April 5-May 17.

The program launches with an initial orientation session (April 5, 9:30am-3pm), followed by six two-hour workshops with expert presentations, field trips, and experiential exercises to develop leadership skills. Participants must take part in two 20-minute telephone interviews, one at the beginning and another at the program's end.
