What Are Your Training Needs? Contact the FLGEC for Free, On-Site Workshops

The Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center (FLGEC) is planning now for Spring 2013 training workshops. The FLGEC works with community groups and health care agencies to provide high quality training opportunities for health professionals who work with older people in rural counties in the Finger Lakes and Western NY. Workshop topics are suggested by the community partners and developed by Chris Decker, the project coordinator. Recent topics include Fall Prevention Techniques for Home Health Workers, Leisure in Little Places, Evidence Based Practices, Polypharmacy, and others.

One of the most popular topics, Sorting Out the 3 Ds - Dementia, Depression, and Delirium, uses materials from the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and provides information on assessment tools to help determine the best care for a patient. A variety of hospitals and long-term care facilities in the 17-county area have partnered with the FLGEC to provide this training for their staff members.

Training workshops are generally two hours long and are held in your facility or in a community setting. Because the FLGEC is grant funded, there is no charge for program coordination, speakers, or handout materials. For more information, contact Christine Decker, FLGEC Program Coordinator, at decker@ithaca.edu, or call 607-274-1604. To learn more about the FLGEC, go here.

Meet Elise Ruckert DPT '06--from Aging Studies Minor to GW Faculty MemberElise Ruckert '06

Interview by Shelby Smith '13, Aging Studies major

Elizabeth (Elise) Ruckert '06 graduated with a bachelor's in clinical science with minors in gerontology and integrative health studies and a doctorate degree in physical therapy. Now a faculty member in George Washington University's Physical Therapy Department in Washington DC, Elise is also a practicing clinician at Making Progress, an outpatient neurologic physical therapy practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Although her primary area of study was physical therapy, Elise had a passion for gerontology. She decided to enroll in an Intro to Gerontology course after seeing a brochure and talking about it with her family. The course was engaging and fascinating to Elise. Realizing the interconnected nature of gerontology and physical therapy, she decided to minor in gerontology: "I knew the pulse of healthcare was going to be greatly affected by the aging population, so it made sense to bridge these two interests together."
