Friends of Nursing

Each year, Virginia Hospital Center celebrates National Week of the Nurse (May 6-13, 2013). In recognition of the importance of nursing to our hospital and community, Virginia Hospital Center Foundation and the Division of Nursing join together to support nursing excellence. On Wednesday, May 8, the Friends of Nursing awards ceremony will bring together family members and colleagues of honored nurses to celebrate the difference nurses make in patients' lives each day. Nursing scholarships, awards for clinical excellence, and professional development funds will be presented.

Friends of Nursing is funded entirely by philanthropy and was established in 1989 with a $250,000 contribution by the Caruthers family. Today, Friends of Nursing is a $3 million endowment comprised of 40 individual funds investing in the education of individuals who want to enter the nursing profession, supporting novice nurses, recognizing the achievements of veteran nurses and promoting advanced nursing certification.

Senator Mark Warner congratulates Virginia Hospital Center for being selected as a Top 100 Hospital by Truven Health Analytics

Virginia Hospital Center was recently selected as a 2013 Top 100 Hospital by Truven Health Analytics. This national ranking is one of the most prestigious in healthcare because it is based on key metrics including patient safety, patient experience, health outcomes, quality of care, and cost efficiency.  Senator Mark R. Warner of Virginia congratulated Virginia Hospital Center on this accomplishment. Senator Warner commended VHC on high quality patient outcomes, improved efficiency, and strong fiscal management. As the only hospital in the region to receive the Everest Award, he congratulated us on fulfilling our mission to be the best hospital. Please click here to read the full letter.

Care First's Support to APC
Recently, Arlington Pediatric Center was awarded a $70,000 grant from CareFirst. This grant will be used to support a pilot scribe program at APC.  A scribe accompanies the pediatrician during patient examinations and records medical information in the electronic medical record (EMR).  Scribes are already successfully used in the Virginia Hospital Center Emergency Department to increase productivity, efficiency and accuracy of the documentation of the patient's history, physical exam findings, assessment and plan.

With more than 11,000 at risk children enrolled at APC, this program will be used to test if scribes can increase productivity at APC, freeing APC pediatricians from EMR documentation, so they can spend more time with patients and see more patients.  Thank you to CareFirst for your support!
