Doctors' Day at VHC

Doctors' Day marks the date (March 30, 1842) that Crawford W. Long, M.D., administered the first ether anesthetic on a patient for surgery. The first Doctors' Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included mailing greeting cards to doctors and placing red carnations on graves of deceased doctors. In 1991, Congress designated March 30, as "National Doctors Day", which celebrates and recognizes the contributions of doctors to individual lives and the community.
With more than 1,300 physicians practicing at the Hospital and committed to healthcare excellence, Virginia Hospital Center medical staff provides high quality, cutting-edge care for thousands of patients, 365 days-a-year. In celebration of 2013 National Doctors' Day (Saturday, March 30), let a special doctor know how much you appreciate his or her commitment to your good health by making a tax-deductible donation in his or her honor to support the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation Click here.
