Spring 2015 Student Recruitment
 
It's not too late to recruit public service students for the Spring 2015 semester, but time is running out. Interns are still looking for placements and service-learning courses are still looking for community partners (see below).

 

To optimize your recruitment, please make sure your CPS-Online profile is up to date (Access CPS On-Line here ) and you've updated your public service activities. Also, we have a workshop today, Wednesday, December 3rd from 3pm-5pm at Tulane's City Center at 1725 Baronne Street regarding volunteer recruitment.  All are welcome to attend.

Free, Accessible and Applicable Technology for Nonprofits Workshop

Date: Wednesday, December 17th 

Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm

 
Location: Tulane City Center, 1725 Baronne St, New Orleans

In today's tech-savvy world there are many free technology resources available to nonprofits. From database management to website development, this workshop will help nonprofits learn about free online tools and programs that exist to help them in their operations.

Fall 2014 Community Partner Survey

 

Did you engage with CPS in Fall 2014?  If so, please take 10 minutes to complete a Partner Survey by December 19th. We use your feedback to make necessary adjustments to our programming. Respondents are eligible for $25, $50 and $100 gift cards to local social enterprises. 

Experiential Education Institute Still Accepting Applications!

 

The Experiential Education and Leadership Institute engages civically minded nonprofit, school-based, healthcare, governmental, business, neighborhood and faith based professionals (Institute "Fellows") with scholars and researchers in a program intended to increase their capacity and that of their communities to address complex social problems through experiential education partnerships. The program aligns with New Orleans' greatest needs and Tulane's most prominent partnership efforts including its new place based focus in the corridor between Tulane's Uptown and Downtown campuses. It is a sequence of half day or day-long explorations where participants and scholars will delve deep into complex social problems including access to basic needs such as quality education, safe and stable living environments, affordable healthcare, healing arts & culture and viable occupations.   For more information, please contact Amanda Buberger a[email protected] or 504-862-8058. The online application can be found here  

Spring 2015 Service Learning Opportunities

Several service-learning faculty are looking for community partners for the Spring 2015 semester. Working with a service-learning course is a great way to connect with Tulane faculty and students on group projects. For more information on specific opportunities, please see below:
 

   

Course: School of Public Health 3110-01 Local Solutions to Global Problems 

Professor: Dr. Elisabeth Gleckler

Need: Course seeks a partner that would like a needs assessment of their program or service. This requires an involved and communicative supervisor. Partners are asked to meet with students at the beginning of the semester to discuss the project, set expectations, establish rules of engagement. Most work will be done by students remotely on their own time. 

Approximate Number of Students: 15 Students

Service Description: Students will plan and execute a community/customer needs assessment. They will write qualitative survey/guide for an agency. Students will work in groups and conduct qualitative analysis under agency's direction. Students will conclude the semester by producing a report for the agency outlining the needs assessment.

Course: School of Public Health 4300 Public Health Communications

Professor: Dr. Elisabeth Gleckler

Need: Course requires a partner that would like a piece of media created to help promote communication on a public health issue. 

Approximate Number of Students: 10

Service Description: In this class, students evaluate a communication issue that an organization has and they create a piece of media (usually a short video, logo or print piece). They conduct a review of literature and case studies to propose a communications solution. They create an example of their solution (a prototype) and then pretest it with the intended audience - usually as a focus group. The organization will receive a final paper, the presentation slides and the media sample and results of a pretest.

Course: Business Management Management of Technology and Innovation

Professor: Michael Wilson

Need: In need of a partner that requires 10-15 hours of direct service, preferably on environmental or food access issues. Friday and Saturday service opportunities of 4-5 hours are ideal.

Approximate Number of Students: 20 students

Service Description: Students will provide 10 hours of direct service, after which students will develop a new product or innovation of an existing product that will help to increase the efficiency of some part of the organization.

Newcomb Art Department Holiday Studio Sale

Annual benefit for the Newcomb Art Department, featuring artwork for sale by students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Tulane University.  A variety of media including glass, ceramics, printmaking, fiber, jewelry, painting, photography, and more will be available.

The Barking Mouse: Lessons from a Mouse Family in Speaking Other Languages

The Pebbles Center at the Algiers Regional Branch of the New Orleans Public Library and the Latin American Resource Center at the Stone Center for Latin American Studies present a story time with author, storyteller, and performance artist Antonio Sacre.  

Sacre will perform a story, The Barking Mouse, which encourages tolerance and bilingual education among children. Crafts, food, and other activities will also be available.  

Sacre is a well-known children's book author and performing artist who has written several books including The Barking Mouse, My Name is Cool, A Mango in the Hand, and La Noche Buena: A Christmas Story.

New Orleans largest costumed wintertime festival kicks off the holiday spirit on December 13! Live Music by Category 6 and Big Sam's Funky Nation, several drink specials, and thousands of people!

Running of the Santas is the hottest costumed holiday tradition in the country where thousands of participants dress in their favorite Christmastime costumes to partake in revelry and merrymaking. The event starts at 3 pm at Barcadia at 601 Tchoupitoulas Street and moves to Generations Hall at 6 pm which is when the "fun run" occurs.

 Mid-City New Orleans comes to vivid life in Ronald Fisher's hilarious novel, Mid-City Errands, offering a unique view of our city through the eyes of seven-year old hero and narrator Vonny Foster, whose investigation of puzzling events in 1959 takes him through the neighborhood, including to now-lost Bayou Road landmarks like Picou's Bakery and Richard's Five and Dime Store. Mr. Fisher describes Mid-City Errands as a coming-of-age adventure, historical fiction, and mystery story all in one.

The author will sign copies at Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book Shop, 631 N. Carrollton Ave. on Saturday, December 6th, at 2 p.m.

Grantwriting for Beginners is an engaging workshop that gives you the basic tools you need to start writing grants.  Participants will learn how to find funding opportunities, tools and tips for writing proposals and the best ways to communicate with prospective funders.

MotherShip Landing- Call for Volunteers!

 

A Studio in the Woods needs help staffing Dawn Dedeaux's Mothership landing show.  Volunteers are needed at LOCATION B, 1024 Elysian Fields Avenue, Thursday - Sunday, Noon to 5pm for the duration of the show. Volunteers will greet visitors, answer questions, and be the on-site presence to the public. Click here for more information.
