Student Spotlight

 Passionate About Engagement

by Emily Costello

Allyson Scheppler,

Public Service Fellow

For some, service learning is a graduation requirement needing to be fulfilled, similar to lab sciences and humanities courses. But for those students who become especially interested in the community partner they assist during their semester of service learning, it becomes more than just a requirement. Allyson Scheppler is one of these students, and a participant in the Public Service Fellows Program here at Tulane.

This program is designed for students who wish to help foster relationships between their community partner and faculty members on campus, while also obtaining professional development and leadership experience in public service.

Allyson serves as a liaison between service-learning classes and the Orleans Public Defenders' Office (OPD), a community partner with the Center for Public Service. She specifically assists Dr. Stephen Ostertag in his Criminology course by organizing students as they conduct interviews during defendants' first appearances in court in New Orleans. During these interviews, students get valuable information such as family phone numbers, which is critical for defendants to be able to post bail and receive emotional support from their families. Essentially, Allyson "works to find ways to encourage students to expand on their reflections of their service learning, as well as effectively communicating with OPD in order to make their experience with Tulane Service Learning a mutually beneficial relationship." Her work not only benefits OPD by providing much needed assistance to the heavy workloads of public defenders, but also allows Tulane students to gain a sobering perspective of the intersectionality of race and class in the New Orleans legal system.

Overall, Allyson's work helps facilitate an important service: proper legal representation to indigent defendants citywide, especially in a city with the most per capita arrests in the world. Allyson is currently a junior at Tulane, studying Psychology. In addition to her efforts with the Public Service Fellows Program, Allyson is also a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity on campus. During her free time, Allyson enjoys exploring all the musical and cultural experiences New Orleans has to offer.

Emily Costello is a senior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Sociology. She works at CPS, where she provides great support to the Public Service Internship Team.

The purpose of this course is to examine the nature of documentary or "verbatim" theatre while focusing on the city of New Orleans.   Students will investigate the following issues:  What is documentary material?  What is the basis for selection?  What is the organizing principle? What is the theatrical idiom?  Who is the intended audience or community?  What is the social or political purpose of documentary drama?

Later in the semester, students will explore a topic or theme relevant to the New Orleans community.  With assistance from our community partners, the class will gather source material (archival research, interviews, oral histories, etc.) and generate an original script, which will be used to create a final project - staged reading.   This performance will be open to the public.
