TU Serves!  is produced weekly to provide Tulane students, staff, faculty, friends, and alumni information relevant to being involved and living in the New Orleans area. Messages posted on this list will include upcoming events such as service/leadership opportunities, special campus events, and community events. Although this listserv is primarily for the Tulane community and our community partner agencies, all are welcome here.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Lower Ninth Ward Food Access Coalition is a group of Lower Nine community leaders and residents committed to addressing the food access issues of the area. They are looking for volunteers to hep conduct their Food Retail Survey this Fall. The two volunteer days are
November 9th and 16th, and the two shift times available on those days are from 9am-12pm and 4pm-7pm. If interested, please e-mail Bryant Dixon.

On November 9th from 8am-1pm, Bayou Natives needs volunteers planting marsh grass! Please contact Andy Baker if you're interested in participating in this fun and messy event!

 

On November 9th from 9am-11:30am and 11:30am-3pm Bayou Natives needs help at Benjamin Franklin High School establishing a demonstration garden at the school for storm water management and wildlife habitat! Show up for great fun and the chance to interact with youth from the city!

 

On November 10th from 5-6pm you have the opportunity to tour the city's treasured Couturie Forest and learn how to identify native and non-native trees! To register, email info@bayourebirth.org. There is a $5 fee that can be paid here. 


Banneker Elementary currently needs volunteers for math tutoring for 6th-8th graders (a basic knowledge of algebra is the highest level ever needed). On Tuesdays and Thursdays, volunteers are needed from 3:15-4:15pm. On Mondays and Wednesdays, volunteers are needed from 1:45-2:45pm (these students are 5th and 6th graders and only need very basic math). If interested, please contact Erin Ricketts.

El Milagro, Iglesia de Dios is looking for a teacher for a weekly ESL class. This position requires a 2-hour commitment once a week (Tuesday or Thursday, 7-9pm) teaching English to adult Spanish speakers. Previous experience teaching and knowledge of Spanish are not necessary but can be helpful. Please contact Laura Sibert.

The Tubman Charter School in Algiers is looking for volunteers to paint classrooms, pack-up classrooms, and clear out "junk" as they make their move into a new building! If interested, please contact Pat Carrier.

The Good Shepherd School, a nonprofit K-7 school, is looking for volunteers tutoring 5th graders with low math scores and other mentoring activities that involve everything from dance, sports, language, and much more. Volunteer hours are from 2:30-5:30pm Monday-Thursday. If interested, please contact Scott Osborn at 504-598-9399.
 Grants, Awards, and Scholarships
 The CDC announces a unique opportunity for a full-time post-doctoral fellowship position in Atlanta, GA beginning as early as January 2014. Individuals with extensive experience conducting research synthesis and secondary data analysis, and who have an interest in adolescent health, sexual health and/or LGBT health are encouraged to apply. Applicants should send a CV and cover letter to Lisa Barrios by November 8th.

PitchNOLA 2013: Community Solutions is an educational and networking opportunity put on by Propeller Social Incubator. The event will take place in the Freeman Auditorium on Tuesday, November 19th at 6:30pm. 

 

The Application for the Class of 2015 National Urban Fellows Academic and Leadership Development Fellowship is now available online. The application deadline is December 5th. Applicants must have a Bachelors degree and 5-7 years work experience. upon completing of the Intent Form, contact Mwape Trunel.

Education Pioneers: We are seeking emerging leaders from diverse academic, professional, and personal backgrounds. Specifically, people who are skilled in data analysis, strategic planning, finance and operations, are interested in working in high-priority cities, and who have roots in and ties to the communities in which we work. Applications for the 2014 Graduate School Fellowship (10-week summer and yearlong placements) and 2014 Partnerships are now open. Application are due December 11th. For more information, click here.

The Autry Fellowship provides recent college graduates the opportunity to work for one year as a full-time, paid staff member at MDC, a non-profit in North Carolina dedicated to opportunity and equality in the South. Salvation Studio Health and Fitness Center is now conducting interviews for part time positions for their Front Desk Staff. Qualified applicants should send resume and contact information here to schedule an interview. 

Grassroots Campaigns is an independent company that uses face-to-face outreach to rally average Americans behind important issues. We raise money, mobilize voters, and offer strategic consulting for charities, progressive political groups, and candidates, specializing in engaging citizens one-on-one in neighborhoods and high-traffic public venues. Workshops, Discussions, and Lectures
SOAR Presents: Undoing Racism Workshop. Are you concerned with confronting racism and economic oppression as a student, staff, or faculty member at Tulane? Do you want to be an effective community organizer in your school, neighborhood, city, and world? The workshop will take place November 15th (6-8 pm), 16th (9am-5pm), and 17th (9am-3pm) at the O Resource Library. All days are required. To register, click here.

Community Connections
 

Sera Je Tibetan monks are coming to Loyola next week! On 11/12 the opening ceremony begins at 9am and sand mandala creation will take place until 5pm. On 11/13 from 9am-5pm there will be sand mandala creation. On 11/14 from 9am-4pm there will be sand mandala creation and from 4:30pm-5pm there will be a closing ceremony. From 7:30-8:30pm in the Nunemaker Auditorium of Monroe Hall there will be Tibetan Buddhist sacred music and chanting.


Cry You One is part song, part story, and part procession that celebrates the people and cultures of South Louisiana while turning clear eyes on the crisis of our vanishing coast. Shows are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Afternoons from October 26th through November 24th. Find all the details here

New Orleans Youth Tennis was founded in response to a lack of recreational opportunities in the aftermath of Katrina. They give free tennis instruction to children ages 6-16 years every Saturday, 8:00-11:00am in City Park. Rackets and balls are provided. No sign up is necessary; all who show up are welcome.

The OC Haley Boulevard Merchants & Business Association present the Central City Festival--Make a Joyful Noise. The fete takes place November 16th from 11:00am-6:00pm in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. Festival goers will move to the rhythms of a range of music from bounce to second line; from jazz to Latin beats. The festival is free and open to the public.
