Cry You One is part song, part story, and part procession that celebrates the people and cultures of South Louisiana while turning clear eyes on the crisis of our vanishing coast. Shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from Oct. 26th through Nov 24th. SOAR Presents: Undoing Racism Workshop. Are you concerned with confronting racism and economic oppression as a student, staff, or faculty member at Tulane? Do you want to be an effective community organizer in your school, neighborhood, city, and world? The Workshop will take place November 15th-17th at the O Resource Library. Take part in founding the Quirky Citizen's Alliance, a Tulane community organization fostering equality without sameness for people with disability and neuron-diversity. The lecture is at 4:30pm on Monday, November 4th, 2013 in the Office Of Multicultural Affairs Library in the Lavin-Bernick Center, room G05. Please contact Jane Vernie for more information or if you are unable to attend.

 

Voodoo Music Festival is being held at City Park November 1st-3rd. The Coordinators of the festival are reaching out to YLC Recycles to see if any volunteers would be interested in volunteering at the Voodoo Fest TRASHed Recycling Store. Volunteers will be responsible for engaging with festival-goers to motivate them to recycle and reward them for their forts. Volunteers must be able to  work all three days, will get one free meal per day, and will get free admission to the festival. Volunteer times are: 1/1 from 9am-

8:30pm, 11/2 from 9:30am-8:30pm, and 11/3 10am-7pm. Sign up here if interested.
 

The Lower Ninth Ward Food Access Coalition is a group of Lower Nine community leaders and residents committed to addressing the food access issues of the area. They are looking for volunteers to help conduct their Food Retail Survey this fall. The two volunteer days are November 9th and 16th,
and the two shifts available on those days are from 9am-12pm and 4pm-7pm. If interested, please email Bryant Dixon.

 

Banneker Elementary currently needs volunteers for math tutoring for 6th-8th graders (a basic knowledge of algebra is the highest level ever needed). On Tuesdays and Thursdays we need students from 3:15 to 4:15. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we need students from 1:45-2:45 (these students are fifth and sixth graders, and only need very basic math). El Milagro, Iglesia de Dios is looking for a teacher for a weekly ESL class. This position requires a 2-hour commitment once a week (Tuesday or Thursday, 7-9 pm) teaching English to adult Spanish-speakers. Previous experiencing teaching and knowledge of Spanish are not necessary but can be helpful. Please contact Laura Sibert.

 

The Tubman Charter School in Algiers is looking for volunteers to paint classrooms, pack-up classrooms, and clear out "junk" as they make their move into a new building! If interested, please contact Pat Carrier

 

The Good Shepherd School, a nonprofit K-7 school, is looking for volunteers tutoring 5th graders with low math scores and other mentoring activities that involve everything from dance, sports, language, and much more. The Institute on Philanthropy & Voluntary Service has been training undergraduate students to be leaders in their community for 15 years through this fast-paced eight week academic internship program, and is now accepting applications for 2014. The Southern Smash College Tour comes on November 4th, and the concept is: "Scale + Sledgehammer=Southern SMASH". Whether it's the number of calories, grades, miles, speed, & especially the number on the scale, students can sometimes allow these exterior things to weigh them down. Join us in breaking those bonds in an afternoon of empowering activities including a BeYOUtiful Photo Booth, Let it Go balloons, Dare to Love Yourself cards, and SCALE SMASHING from 11am-2pm on the LBC Quad. The SmashTALK from 5:30-7:30pm will be an open discussion with leading body image and eating disorder experts, and will take place in the Kendall Cram Lecture Hall in the LBC.

 

Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian is joining us at Tulane on November 1st. He will discuss his new book, share the story behind his success and interview Tulane alum/Reddit Gm, Erik Martin. Tim Wise, Tulane alum, is among the most prominent anti-racism writers and educators in the US. Named one of "25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World" by Utne Reader, he has written several books on racial and social justice, and is a regular contributor on hundreds of TV and radio programs. He has been featured in several documentary films, and his newest film, "White Like Me", uses his biography and political analysis to explore race and racism through the lens of whiteness and white privilege, and features Michelle Alexander among others. Tim Wise is coming to speak November 4th from 6-7pm at the Freeman Auditorium in the Woldenberg Art Center.

   

On November 5th, the 13 students who traveled to India this fall from the School of Social Work will be presenting to the community their stories, learning, and the meaning of this experience. They're working very hard on this and I hope you can join us. The presentation will take place in the School of Social Work Building, room 103 from 12pm - 2pm.

 

Melissa Harris-Perry, MSNBC host, Anna Julia Cooper Project director, and professor of political science, will moderate a panel on the increasing incarceration of women and its impact on society on November 6th at 6pm in the Kendell Cram Room of the LBC. Panelists include Susan Burton, founder of A New Way of Life Reentry Project; Deon Haywood, executive director of Women With a Vision; Tina Reynolds, founder of Women on the Rise Telling Her Story (WORTH); and Beth Richie, director of the Institute for Research on Race & Public Policy at the University of Illinois-Chicago, as well as the author of Arrested Justice: Black Women, Violence, and America's Prison Nation.

Dean's Coffee Fridays: Friday, November 1st, Don't miss the Friday morning tradition of coffee and donuts on the Cudd Hall porch, from 9:30 am until the goodies run out. On the first Friday of every month, the Dean's Coffee also presents live music. This month's featured performers are bassist Nick Benoit, John Doheny on saxophone, and guitarist Mike Smith. It's hosted by Dean James MacLaren, and all Newcomb-Tulane College undergraduates, faculty, and staff are invited. See you there!

New Orleans Youth Tennis was founded in response to a lack of recreational opportunities in the aftermath of Katrina. They give free tennis instruction to children ages 6-16 years every Saturday between 8am-11am in City Park. Rackets and balls are provided. They also sponsor a racket giveaway in the Spring, and a two-week clinic in June. No sign up is necessary; all who show up are welcome. 

 
The OC Haley Boulevard Merchants & Business Association present the Central City Festival--Make a Joyful Noise. The fete takes place November 16th from 11am-6pm in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. Festival goers will move to the rhythms of a range of music from bounce to second line, and from jazz to Latin beats. The festival is free and open to the public.
