Tulane's Make a Difference Week (M.A.D. Week) is part of a national effort to celebrate neighbors helping neighbors through service. Sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine and Points of Light, Make a Difference Day is the nation's largest day of community service and occurs annually on the fourth Saturday of October. CPS expanded this day into an entire week five years ago and is now proud to celebrate this year's theme, "Connecting the Dots" with an action-packed week of opportunities that promote meaningful conversations and a sense of committed responsibility that extends beyond the confines of our campus. Come sign up at the table outside of Stern Hall from October 14th to the 24th!

Cry You One is part song, part story, and part procession that celebrates the people and cultures of South Louisiana while turning clear eyes on the crisis of our vanishing coast. Shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from Oct. 26th through Nov 24th. Get involved and help out with the
Freret Halloween Festival on
October 29th from 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm. The Freret Neighborhood Center is looking for residents to volunteer to help at the event, to donate candy and costumes, and to attend! There is a collection bin to donate candy and costumes in the CPS office. Some volunteering opportunities are: to help out in the costume clinic, as a face painter, as a food server, or as a line-leader. Volunteer orientation is on October 23rd from 6:30-8:00 PM. SOAR Presents: Undoing Racism Workshop. Are you concerned with confronting racism and economic oppression as a student, staff, or faculty member at Tulane? Do you want to be an effective community organizer in your school, neighborhood, city, and world? The Workshop will take place November 15th -17th at the O Resource Library. Friday from 6-8pm, Saturday from 9am-5pm, and Sunday from 9am-3pm. A Follow Up will take place on December 4th, location TBD. To register click here.

  The House I Live In is a 2012 documentary about America's War on Drugs, featuring Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, among many others. While recognizing the seriousness of drug abuse as a matter of public health, the film examines how the war has accounted for more than 45 million arrests, made America the world's largest jailer, and damaged poor communities at home and abroad for over forty years. Despite these facts, drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available today than ever before. To learn more about the film, click here. Boo at the Zoo, a family oriented Halloween event that benefits Audubon Zoo and Children's Hospital, is looking for volunteers! There are several opportunities the third and/or fourth week in October. If Interested, contact Nancy Willis.
The Lower Ninth Ward Food Access Coalition is a group of Lower Nine community leaders and residents committed to addressing the food access issues of the area. They are looking for volunteers to help conduct their Food Retail Survey this fall. The two volunteer days are November 9th and 16th, and the two shifts available on those days are from 9am-12pm and 4pm-7pm. If interested, please email Bryant Dixon.
Banneker Elementary currently needs volunteers for math tutoring for 6th-8th graders (a basic knowledge of algebra is the highest level ever needed). On Tuesdays and Thursdays we need students from 3:15 to 4:15. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we need students from 1:45-2:45 (these students are fifth and sixth graders, and only need very basic math). El Milagro, Iglesia de Dios is looking for a teacher for a weekly ESL class. This position requires a 2-hour commitment once a week (Tuesday or Thursday, 7-9 pm) teaching English to adult Spanish-speakers. Previous experiencing teaching and knowledge of Spanish are not necessary but can be helpful. Please contact Laura Sibert.
The Tubman Charter School in Algiers is looking for volunteers to paint classrooms, pack-up classrooms, and clear out "junk" as they make their move into a new building! If interested, please contact Pat Carrier
The Good Shepherd School, a nonprofit K-7 school, is looking for volunteers tutoring 5th graders with low math scores and other mentoring activities that involve everything from dance, sports, language, and much more. The annual "Widow's Ball" at Unity nursing home is a festive fall event where the residents get to dress up in costumes, listen to great music, and dance! This year, a group of volunteers from "Project Grandpeople" will be heading to Unity to help with the event and celebrate the Halloween season with the residents. This year's ball will be held October 23rd from 2:00-4:30pm at Unity (539 Delachaise street.)
Wikithon: Writing Under-Represented Groups into Wikipedia: Come to the Collat Media lab in the Caroline Richardson Building on October 27th from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm and learn to edit Wikipedia, increase visibility of underrepresented groups, and contribute to topics important to our communities. Wikipedia Ambassador, Becky Carmichael, will share her experiences and lead a workshop on how to get started editing Wikipedia.
On November 5th, the thirteen students who traveled to India this fall from the School of Social Work will be presenting to the school community their stories, their learning and the meaning of this experience. They're working very hard on this and I hope you can join us. The presentation will take place in the School of Social Work Building, room 103 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm.

Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates from all majors and backgrounds who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. The next deadline of application is

The OC Haley Boulevard Merchants & Business Association present the Central City Festival--Make a Joyful Noise. The annual fete takes place November 16 from 11 am - 6 pm in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. Festival goers will move to the rhythms of a range of music from bounce to secondline, and from jazz to Latin beats. The festival is free and open to the public.
