Mwende in her own words:

Hello, my name is Mwende Katwiwa and I am a senior at Tulane and the inaugural Heim Student Service Fellowship recipient. Through the Heim Fellowship, I will be assisting Tulane students in identifying and selecting service-learning initiatives that are mutually beneficial to them and their host organization so that the most meaningful service can be provided and received. Through this, I hope to help improve Tulane's overall serving-learning programs as well as the engagement and understanding that Tulane students have of service and its impact during school and beyond.

I am passionate about service and chose to attend Tulane after taking a year off in between college and high school to volunteer in the Greater New Orleans area. My favorite thing about community service is engaging communities in the recognition of their inherent strengths and working within them to find sustainable solutions to closing opportunity and resource gaps. I hope to use my position as a Heim Fellow to make other students similarly passionate about service and community empowerment in college and in their future careers.

You can find me in the Center for Public Service office on the following days:

Mondays: 10am-12pm, 2pm-5pm
Thursdays: 2pm-5pm
Fridays: 2-4pm

For more information, you can contact me at servicepath@tulane.edu.

I look forward to meeting with you!

International Programs

  CIAPA: Costa Rica

Tulane's Central American Experience, Fall 2014

Have you ever wanted to see the beautiful island of Costa Rica?  Have you ever wanted to intern overseas?  If your answer to either of these questions is "Yes," then the Tulane CIAPA Fall Program is for you!  Spend your fall semester studying at Tulane's CIAPA campus in San José, Costa Rica.  This extraordinary program offers more than 6 service internship opportunities.  Work with a non-profit to reduce school drop out rates, intern at a hospital serving the metropolitan community, or promote peace, freedom, and democracy within Costa Rica.

Commemorate Jewish life, culture, and history or work with governmental agencies on developing programming for civic education.  No matter what you are interested in, CIAPA has it! This is a unique opportunity that allows you to experience different working cultures and environments while living on CIAPA's campus right outside of San José.

 The Autry Fellowship with MDC

The Autry Fellowship is a competitive fellowship program for talented and ambitious recent college graduates. It provides an opportunity to work for one year as a full-time, paid staff member at MDC. The Autry Fellowship supports the mission of MDC--to help organizations and communities in the South close the gaps that separate people from opportunity--by developing a cadre of young leaders who have experience promoting economic development, increasing equity and excellence in education, building inclusive civic cultures, and who are poised and ready to apply their new learning to benefit this region.

The Autry Fellowship celebrates the life and perpetuates the work of the late George B. Autry, founding president of MDC. For 32 years, he led MDC with a passion for improving opportunities for people and places struggling to keep pace with economic and social change. The ideal Autry Fellow is open-minded and compassionate, curious and reflective, and deeply committed to advancing social equity and opportunity.

To learn more about the Autry Fellowship and to stay up-to-date on MDC's work, visit our website and like us on Facebook.  Applicants must submit a complete application  along with a resume by Mon, Jan. 13 at 5pm. You should get confirmation of receipt within 48 hours of submission. MDC staff will notify all candidates of their status within four weeks of the deadline and choose the Fellow immediately following an interview day the week of Feb. 17.
