TU Serves!  is produced weekly to provide Tulane students, staff, faculty, friends, and alumni information relevant to being involved and living in the New Orleans area. Messages posted on this list will include upcoming events such as service/leadership opportunities, special campus events, and community events. Although this listserv is primarily for the Tulane community and our community partner agencies, all are welcome here.
Give Back Grants
 
The Give Back Grant Competition is now in full swing! The competition will provide monetary awards to four undergraduate student-generated engagement projects. Individual students, groups of students, and organizations are encouraged to submit project ideas through an application found here. All projects wishing to be considered for the finalist rounds must attend a training session on 
October 8th from 5:00pm - 7:00 pm 
NOLA Film Festival!
 
The New Orleans Film Festival takes place October 10th - 17th. Some community driven films we're excited about here at CPS are Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek, and 12 Years a Slave. The festival also offers select free screenings listed in the festival program found here. In addition to films, there will be numerous panel discussions including Call and Response: Post Disaster Storytelling on the Gulf Coast. CPS Guest Speakers
 
CPS presents guest speakers Lois Backon, Executive Director of the Global Philanthropy at JP Morgan Chase, and John Kallenborn, President of the Louisiana Market for JP Morgan chase on October 7th from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm in the Stibbs Conference Room on the second floor of the LBC. The series is entitled Corporate Responsibility and Philanthropy: Integral to Business and will reflect on the roll of corporations in the field of philanthropy, focusing on maximizing the integration of philanthropic, community relations and business priorities For more information, please contact Nick Tringali.
Marsh Grass Planting
The  Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is looking for 30 volunteers to get DIRTY on October 19th planting marsh grass. CRCL works hard fighting to keep Louisiana's wetlands viable! Students will be volunteering with Tulane alumni for this fun, messy, and eco-driven event! If interested, please contact Avery Brewton by

Volunteer Opportunities 

 

The American Red Cross is looking for individuals with or without shelter training to help with shelters being opened for Tropical Storm Karen this weekend. If you have shelter operations training, click here. If you do not, click here, create an account and go through the training. For both groups, please additionally e-mail  Austen Hawk. 

 

Sigma Delta Tau is looking for as many volunteers as they can get to participate in a "thank you" video to be sent to all the wonderful Tulane alumni who continually dedicate their time to service in New Orleans. To participate, please be in front of Gibson Hall at 3:30 on October 8th! 

 

The Free Southern Theatre 50th Anniversary is looking  for a variety of volunteers. A full list of opportunities can be found here! If interested, please email Sage Crump by October 9th.

 

Boo at the Zoo a family oriented Halloween event that benefits Audubon
 Zoo and Children's Hospital is looking for volunteers! There are serveral opportunities 
 third and/or fourth week in October, contact Nancy Willis.

  

The Good Shepherd School, a nonprofit K-7 school is looking for tutoring 5th grades with low math scores and mentoring activities that involve everything from dance, sports, language, or a variety of other activities. Volunteer hours are from 2:30-5:30 Monday through Thursday. If interested, please contact Scott Osborn at 504-598-9399.

 

The Friends of Southeast Louisiana Wildlife Refuges needs volunteers to help celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week on October 12! If you're looking for a way to give back to the environment around you, contact David Stoughton.

 

The Jesuit Volunteer Corps is looking for year long volunteer commitments from individuals who wish to devote their life to service through God. If interested contact Maria Ibarra-Frayre.

 

Neighborhood Partnership Network is looking for students to distribute surveys in the Lakeview, Ponchartrain Park, and Holy Cross neighborhoods. Students must provide their own transportation and will be paid for completion. Contact Remeka Jones.

 

Workshops, Discussions and Lectures
 
Guerrilla Marketing: Sharing Your Cause Effectively is a workshop that will be held October 8 from 5pm-7pm in the CELT conference room (310 Richardson Building)  to teach individuals to effectively compose a story that compels others to join your cause. SXSW Eco is a 3-day sustainability conference is taking place in Austin,TX from October 7th-9th. SXSW is offering Tulane's NetImpact complimentary badges for this year's event. If you're interested, email NhuNgoc Pham

  

Amnesty International presents a lecture "Education is a Human Right " by Edith Garwood. The lecture is  about improving education access for all people. The event will take place October 8th from 8:30 - 10:30 in the Stibbs room on the second floor of the LBC

 

Grant Cooper gives a lecture on October 9th entitled "How to Leverage Nonprofit and Community Volunteerism for Career Success" at the YLC Building (15 Euterpe St.) from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. To register for the event, click here. 

 

The opportunity to become a Peer Ambassador for CHATNola starts on October 23rd. Students will learn leadership skills over this six week training program. If interested, please contact CHATNola here.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award application is due October 15th to Avery Brewton. The award is given to students dedicated to community service and who's character embodies the greatest aspects of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For more information, click here
 
Pitch Nola is having a competition in which the individual with the best project "pitch" to benefit the residents of New Orleans receives help to make it happen! If you'd like to learn more about the project, click here! The application deadline is October 17th.

The application for the Class of 2015 National Urban Fellows Academic and Leadership Development Fellowship is now available online. Applicants must have Bachelors degree and 5-7 years work experience. Upon completion of the Intent Form, contact Mwape Trunel
