 Degree Motivates Resident to
Make a Difference

Through candid discussions and surveys we've learned that some residents find themselves hesitant to go back to school. They realize earning a higher education would help alleviate some of their ongoing struggles, but various obstacles get in the way of them pursuing their goals. For Markita Lewis of Pinegrove Apartments, this was an obstacle she was determined to overcome. "I was constantly working and investing time in dead end jobs that were just barely getting me by. I made a promise to myself - if the opportunity ever came around for me to go back to school, I would take full advantage and not stop."

Markita worked very hard in order to pursue her education. After beginning her college career in 2002 at Elizabeth City State University, she was faced with the unexpected death of her mother. "I mentally could not get myself together and I stopped going to school," Markita explained. As time went on, Markita's family grew by three children and she became primarily focused on supporting them as a single mother. It was in 2012 that she decided to get back on track with her education. "The opportunity just seemed to fit. I figured if I was living in affordable housing, I should make the most of it. I decided to apply at Shaw University and was accepted. I was so excited!" While living at Pinegrove Apartments, Markita was also introduced to CAHEC's David T. Peet Adult Education Grant, and has since earned $4,000 towards her educational expenses. "The funding has been a big help - it has helped pay for my tuition and books, and prevented me from seeking additional student loans."

Markita selected social work as her degree of choice. She is passionate about helping others that were oppressed, vulnerable, and in need. "These individuals and families need a voice to represent and protect them, and I want to be that voice." During college, Markita developed a motivation to work within the child welfare sector. Her drive to help innocent children was nothing short of inspirational. "If our children are our future, I feel like we have to provide a proper environment for them to become a stable and productive adult. Entering this field will allow me to invest in our community's future. I will have peace of mind knowing the world might not be too corrupt when I become elderly."

Our Mission in Action

CAHEC is more than a provider of equity financing. We are committed to being a relevant presence within the communities we serve by supporting a number of initiatives that provide sustainable opportunities such as loans, grants, and our unique Community Investments to our partners.
  • Congratulations to Parkside Commons in Greenville, NC, on receiving $8,500 through CAHEC's Rex Williams Wellness Grant! This grant provided a treadmill, elliptical, dumbbell set, flat bench, trifold mats, and exercise posters for residents to use in the property's wellness room.
  • Mike Rodgers, one of CAHEC's Acquisitions Managers, recently shared his expertise at the Palmetto Housing Forum regarding best practices properties use during the end of their Year 15 compliance period. We are proud to have staff like this as part of our team to share their knowledge on the affordable housing industry.
Our Community Investments staff conducts educational orientations to assist our partners with selecting CAHEC wellness and education grants. To schedule an orientation, or for assistance with CAHEC's  Community Investments, please contact Stefanie Lee at 919-645-9825 or slee@cahec.com. A detailed overview of our Community Investments grants can be found on our website.

CAHEC Participates in 2016 ALS Walk

On Saturday, April 23, several CAHEC employees and family members gathered in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, to participate in the 2016 Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS. This great event, which raises money to find a cure for this terrible disease, is special to the CAHEC Team. In 2012, we said goodbye to Rex Williams, a former member of CAHEC's Board of Directors, who passed away after a courageous four year battle with ALS.

Every year we look forward to this fantastic event to have the opportunity to walk in honor of Rex as a part of "Rexy's Racers." Rex was a man who touched numerous lives, especially here at CAHEC, and inspired all who knew him with his sense of humor and contagious smile.

To learn more about ALS, or to donate to the cause, please visit the ALS Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter website.
