 CAHEC Inspired By
Heatherton Park Family

You always hear about the group of volunteers that help at various community events, from assisting a local nonprofit to raising money to fund a worthy cause. Rarely do you hear the story behind the people that spend their time volunteering in their community. However, in a recent interview with the property manager at Heatherton Park Apartments in Jacksonville, NC, we were able to learn more about an inspirational family living right on their property - the Heard family.

Whether a neighbor needs a ride to work or if an elderly friend downstairs needs assistance, the Heards are always there to lend a helping hand. "This is one family that is always doing wonderful things for the people in their community. They are caring and giving people, and I can't say enough good things about them," the property manager said with pride. "I've seen the mother, Mrs. Heard, often give rides to people if they are without a car and need to get to work. I can't tell you how nice it is to see our community coming together."

During the holidays, the Heards helped with a food drive for the residents of Heatherton Park. With the help of a local church and Partnership Property Management (PPM), the site was able to put together a food basket - including a ham, all the fixings, drinks, and various boxed goods - for each of the 40 units on the property. Each child also received a wrapped gift, which is incredible since there are nearly 60 children living on-site. The property even received enough food donations to help provide a meal at another apartment community that PPM manages. "Mr. and Mrs. Heard were extremely helpful during this entire event, even their two kids were excited to pitch in!"

Mrs. Heard was very humble while sharing her family's story with us, in fact, she didn't really want to be acknowledged for the great things she and her family do in the community. "We don't really want credit for doing any of this, we just believe it's our responsibility to help others when we can."

CAHEC is always happy to hear these inspiring stories about the residents living in our communities. If your property has a family or individual that deserves recognition for their volunteerism, please share their story with Stefanie Lee at slee@cahec.com.

Our Mission in Action

CAHEC is more than a provider of equity financing. We are committed to being a relevant presence within the communities we serve by supporting a number of initiatives that provide sustainable opportunities such as loans, grants, and our unique Community Investments to our partners.
  • Congratulations to City Lights Apartment Homes in Atlanta, GA, on receiving the Best 55+ Affordable Rental Community award from The National Association of Builders. This award recognizes excellence and innovation in the design, development, lifestyle, and marketing of housing that appeals to the mature market.
  • Hatcher Tobacco Flatts in Richmond, VA, was recently awarded $8,500 through CAHEC's Rex Williams Wellness Grant to help supplement the existing equipment in their wellness room. This grant helped provide additional treadmills, spin bikes, exercise mats, and a dumbbell set for residents to use during their daily work out routines.
  • Members of the CAHEC staff recently attended the grand opening of the new Children's Pavilion at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, one of CAHEC's New Markets Tax Credit investments. We are proud to be a part of helping improve the healthcare of children in central Virginia.
Our Community Investments staff conducts educational orientations to assist our partners with selecting CAHEC wellness and education grants. To schedule an orientation, or for assistance with CAHEC's  Community Investments, please contact Stefanie Lee at 919-645-9825 or slee@cahec.com. A detailed overview of our Community Investments grants can be found on our website.

CAHEC is excited to announce the launch of the 2016 Open Doors Homeownership Grant application! If your organization develops affordable housing for sale to low-income households living within our footprint, you could be eligible to apply. This year, CAHEC will award three grants: one at $25,000; one at $15,000; and one at $10,000, to nonprofits needing assistance with expenses that are not usually included in their developmental budgets, like training, travel, marketing, and consultants.

Organizations interested in applying must complete and submit their application through our online portal by July 31 to be considered. For more information on grant criteria, the application process, or previous grant recipients, please visit our website or contact Stefanie Lee at slee@cahec.com. We encourage our partners to help us spread the word about this wonderful grant opportunity.

CAHEC Awards New Markets Community Grants

CAHEC recently awarded $20,000 in New Markets Community Grants on behalf of two of our New Markets Tax Credit partners. These funds were granted towards projects that positively impact low-income communities, low- to moderate-income workers, and/or low-income persons served by the New Market Tax Credit investments. The developers of the Carmichael Building, home to Duke University's Molecular Physiology Institute, directed their $10,000 in grant funding to Duke's Talent Identification Program (TIP), for the development of innovative education programs and need-based scholarships for youth attending their program. Dot Foods, a food redistribution company that employs many truck drivers, donated their $10,000 in grant funding to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) - Newbern, to purchase a new engine for the truck used in the school's Truck Driving course. We look forward to following the success of both educational programs!
