 Discounted Computers for
Low-Income Residents

The world is continuously morphing into a technology-based society and it can be a struggle for low-income families to keep up. With a limited budget, most residents rely heavily on their smart phones and tablets to engage with the outside world. For these reasons, having access to a home computer is becoming more vital than ever: online college enrollment is steadily increasing, and homework for school children almost always requires some type of online assistance. How can we solve this problem?

Recently, CAHEC discovered a nonprofit organization called InterConnection, which connects underserved communities to the computers and communications technology they need. Through this initiative, low-income residents are able to buy a refurbished desktop computer and monitor for as low as $89.00 and laptop computers for as low as $129.00. Each computer ships for free, includes pre-installed Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7, and is covered by a 12-month warranty. InterConnection will also offer CAHEC residents an additional 10% off their purchase by using the coupon code ICCH10. To learn more about eligibility requirements, visit the InterConnection website and register for an account.

Please help spread the word about this great opportunity with your residents, colleagues, and partners using this informational flyer. Distribute the flyer via email, or print it out and hang it in your community space.

InterConnection relies heavily on the personal and business donations of computers, tablets, and smart phones, which they refurbish and sell at a discounted price to other customers. To find a donation center near you, or to contact the organization directly, please visit their website for more details.

Our Mission in Action

CAHEC is more than a provider of equity financing. We are committed to being a relevant presence within the communities we serve by supporting a number of initiatives that provide sustainable opportunities such as loans, grants, and our unique Community Investments to our partners.
  • Congratulations to Garden Grove and Reelfoot Apartments, both located in Tennessee, on collectively receiving $10,000 through CAHEC's Active Lifestyle Grant for installing quality recreation areas.
  • The CAHEC staff recently participated in a "Mini Geek-A-Thon" at Kramden Institute as part of our annual Team Outreach. CAHEC assisted their staff by refurbishing donated computers, and as a result, more than 50 computers will be awarded to students and families without a computer in their home.

  • CAHEC is proud to announce we added 17 properties to our portfolio in December, including a 15 RD rehab properties throughout Kentucky. For 2015, CAHEC's investments portfolio increased by 49 investments! To learn more about each community, visit our 2015 Closings page.
Our Community Investments staff conducts educational orientations to assist our partners with selecting CAHEC wellness and education grants. To schedule an orientation, or for assistance with CAHEC's  Community Investments, please contact Stefanie Lee at 919-645-9825 or slee@cahec.com. A detailed overview of our Community Investments grants can be found on our website.

Exciting Opportunity for Our Youth Residents

CAHEC is partnering with the North Carolina Banker's Association Foundation (Camp Challenge) again this year as part of our Youth Leadership Initiative. Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders for the 2016-2017 school year living at CAHEC-sponsored properties have the opportunity to apply for a FREE week long summer camp, where they participate in traditional camp activities and an interactive financial education course. Applications are available on our website and must be submitted by March 18, 2016. For more details about this initiative, please visit our website or contact Stefanie Lee at 919-645-9825 or slee@cahec.com.

Results are in for the 2015 Triangle Tree Challenge

CAHEC, along with more than 50 other local nonprofits, participated in the 2015 Triangle Tree Challenge by decorating a tree at Diamond View Park on the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, NC, and competing for votes to win prizes. CAHEC has always participated with a pledge to donate any winnings to an area nonprofit that serves low-income residents of the Triangle.

We would like to thank our friends and partners for all of your votes for our tree! Although we did not bring home a prize this year, we're proud of your participation and appreciate all of your support. A special thank you to the residents of Bowman Manor, Glenbrook Meadows, Village of New Hope, and Water Garden Park, who helped decorate the wooden houses we proudly had on display. We are already brainstorming ideas for the 2016 tree and can't wait to share our ideas!
