Wilmington Mayor Visits Bancroft Third Graders

On May 27, City of Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams visited third grade students in Ms. O'Brien's class at Bancroft Elementary School. Students had recently been learning about persuasive writing and the students used the need for a community center on the eastside of Wilmington as the catalyst to engage in the writing process.  Students immediately related to the very real need for a place where they can be kids, learn things that aren't taught in school and to develop athletically without the fear of drugs and violence.  A mentor at Bancroft, Commissioner Starkey learned about the project and urged Mayor Williams to visit the school.  For an hour, the Mayor listened to students reading their essays, answered questions, and even signed autographs.  The morning concluded with a pizza lunch provided by the Commissioner.  This opportunity to interact with the Mayor will not soon be forgotten by the children.

Fourteen CSD Elementary Schools Participate in
Meaningful Economics Competition

Fourteen elementary schools from the Christina School District participated in the 29th Annual Meaningful Economics competition at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark.  Meaningful Economics is a competition sponsored by the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware.  Teams of four students competed on an economics test, a production task and problem solving activity. An example of the problem-solving activity this year was to come up with a camp geared towards their parents or teachers, design a poster, and present a two minute "infomercial" to a panel of volunteer judges from local banking institutions.  Ribbons were presented for teams that placed in the top 4, and everyone received a t-shirt.  Enrichment teachers worked to prepare the students leading up to the day long competition, which is a favorite of students.  Students from Bancroft, Brookside, Brader, Downes, Gallaher, Keene, Leasure, Maclary, Marshall, McVey, Smith, Stubbs, West Park Place, and Wilson all participated. The Meaningful Economics competition is a great example of showcasing what Christina students have been learning in the classroom and applying it to real-world economic situations while having fun at the same time.

Brader's Zachary Gainey Award Winners
Celebrate their Love of Reading

Congratulations to the Brader Elementary School Zachary Gainey Award winners for the 2014-2015 school year! Zachary Gainey was a delightful Kindergarten student who absolutely loved books and reading. Zachary would rush into the classroom each morning excited to return his library books to the library so that he could get a new book. He and his twin brother Dillon, were born in 1995. Zachary spent several years battling leukemia. In spite of what he had endured, Zachary was always cheerful and an enthusiastic student. Unfortunately, Zachary succumbed to complications from leukemia in December 2000. He is deeply missed. His parents established the award, and the wonderful Brader PTA has continued to honor students who love to read, by granting a gift certificate to those students who have checked out and read the highest number of books from our Library each year in each grade level.

Congratulations to this year's recipients:
  • Kindergarten: Chynna Womack (49 books)
  • Grade 1:  Lily Ann Fenwick (52 books)
  • Grade 2:  Tenai Waller McNair - TOP READER IN SCHOOL (162 books)
  • Grade 3:  Devan Watkins (93 books)
  • Grade 4:  Karl Schanz (33 books)
  • Grade 5:  Khyati Shinghal (85 books)

Exciting Events in the Brader Vegetable Garden

Students recently enjoyed the first harvest from the Brader Elementary School vegetable garden. The first harvest was lettuce and spinach, which was served to Brader students in the school cafeteria as well as visiting students from Pulaski Elementary School. Earlier in the season, State Representative Paul Baumbach and Representative and Mrs. Earl Jaques paid a visit to the vegetable garden. Both are supportive of the School Vegetable Garden effort and spoke positively about this effort at Legislative Hall in Dover. Students are looking forward to harvesting turnips, radishes, tatsoi, and wrinkled cress next! Thank you to Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids for its support!

Gallaher Student Wins Delaware Dental Society Poster Contest!

To celebrate dental health month, Gallaher Elementary School 3rd grade students attended a dental health presentation provided by "Happy Tooth" which was presented by Nancy Brohawn of Newark Dental Associates. Students learned about proper brushing and flossing techniques and the importance of eating healthy and visiting the dentist regularly. Students used the information to create posters using the entertaining theme "Defeat Monster Mouth" during art class with Mrs. Kelly Walzl, with many creative posters entered in the Delaware Dental Society's poster contest!

Congratulations to Alexander Gallegos-Araujo who was the winner for New Castle County! Alexander and his family were invited to the Delaware Dental Society conference at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club where his poster was displayed. He was recognized during the conference and received a prize for his excellent work. Congratulations Alexander!

There were so many wonderful posters this year that the Dental Society announced and displayed several Honorable Mentions. Congratulations to the following students: Kayla Chatman, Madison Harpe, Adrienne McCollum, Navaeh Reed, Kameen Rollins, and Jimena Zavala-Villagomez. Great job!

Gallaher Third Graders Benefit from
Children's Fund Literacy Grant

Many thanks go out to the Delaware Community Foundation this school year! Gallaher Elementary School was awarded the Children's Fund Literacy Grant to purchase a Claude Monet biography for each third grade student. During art, the students read the biography to integrate the Visual Art Standards and the Common Core Standards to teach a unit on Claude Monet and how to create a landscape. The students worked in collaborative pairs to read the book, Claude Monet, Sunshine and Waterlilies. While reading the biography, the children searched for new art vocabulary words to add to their art dictionary. After gathering background knowledge and examining landscapes by Claude Monet, the students created their own painting using similar techniques and colors that the artist had used. At the end of the unit, the students took home their book and their paintings to share the love of literacy and the arts with their families!

Gallaher Students Place First and Third in
"Kids Safe Online" Poster Contest

The Delaware Department of Technology and Information (DTI) has announced the winners of its Annual Cyber Security Awareness Campaign "Kids Safe Online" Poster Contest. Marshall's Vegetable Garden Reaps Two Successful Harvests

Marshall Elementary School had two successful harvests this year from their school vegetable garden. The first was all the makings for a healthy salad which included romaine, tri-color lettuce, spinach and shungiku.  The second harvest was a pleasant surprise with carrots and beets.  Students were so proud and jumped for joy when they were able to try out the carrots from their school's vegetable garden. Thanks to all the Marshall students for their hard work and thanks to Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids for its support. Marshall's vegetable garden was a huge success this spring!

Marshall Students are "Phanatics About Reading!"

Students in Room 33 at Marshall Elementary School were challenged by their teachers, Mrs. Schneider and Mrs. Snider, to read twenty minutes per night and participate in the Phillies "Be a Phanatic about Reading" Program.  The program supplies incentives for students to read daily, as teachers encourage them and monitor their progress.  The teachers submitted a completed evaluation, and were selected to win the grand prize -- a visit from the Philly Phanatic!  Students who work with the teachers, as well as the whole school win an assembly with the Phanatic as he celebrates Marshall Elementary for being "Phanatics about Reading!"

First "Queen Bea" Scholarship Honoring Former Keene Principal Awarded to GHS
Senior Katherine Salhuana

On June 2, the first Queen Bea Scholarship was awarded in the Christina School District. Following the passing of the long time principal of Keene Elementary School, Beatrice Speir, in the fall of 2014, students, peers, friends and family established a scholarship in her name. The school's PTA held fundraisers and individuals made contributions to honor this lifelong educator. Criteria for the award Bea helped create included a young woman that demonstrated leadership, valued education and had mastery of more than one language (Mrs. Speir was a gifted linguist with 5 languages in her repertoire). The application process included an essay and a committee interview. A number of candidates were considered, but one stood out among her peers, Ms. Katherine Salhuana, a graduating senior of Glasgow High School. Having been brought to the United States at age 6 from Peru, Kathy has made the most of the opportunities that her family was hoping she might have in this country. In a long list of accomplishments, she was the Commander of the Glasgow AFJROTC, Vice-President of the Honor Society and is the Class of 2015's Valedictorian. Heather Bordas, Senior Director of Elementary Education in the Christina School District (CSD) and longtime friend of Ms. Speir said, "She intends to be successful and Bea would have loved her enthusiasm and the way she cares for others." Attending University of Delaware this fall, Ms. Salhuana received her scholarship at the Senior Award's program, presented by Mariellen Taraboletti, Acting Principal (and former assistant to Speir) and Jennifer Shields-Russell, CSD Equity Specialist, mentored by Mrs. Speir. The principal of Glasgow High School, Mr. Dean Ivory, sang Salhuana's praises, "She is a very deserving young woman."

Newark Seniors Have More Work To Do

Once again, Newark High School is proud of its Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) team. FCCLA is a wonderful organization that instills leadership and organizational skills in the youth of today while developing their skills in areas such as Fashion Design and Food Innovations. Led by Glenn Feeny and Erecha Laney, the Newark High School FCCLA proved themselves stronger than ever at this year's competition in Dover.

Held at Dover Downs, the events at this year's convention were competitive. Ms. Laney's student Azha McIntosh took home a silver medal in Fashion Design for the second year in a row. Mr. Feeny had four bronze winning students, Rachel Carlson and Jasmine Stregles in Appetizer, as well as Kristen Hunter and Sunain Masood in Food Innovations. Megan Peters and Alayna Hammond received silver in Food Innovations and Tiana Jackson received a silver medal in Healthy Trends. A gold medal was awarded to Paola Tapimene for her appetizer at the competition.

Students who receive the highest score in the gold category are awarded the honor of top gold and the opportunity to compete in the national competition this summer in Washington D.C. All five students that are attending Nationals this year happen to be seniors. Even though they will be graduating in days, the work is not done for the Newark High FCCLA Seniors. For the fourth year in a row, Mr.Feeny will be taking several students to the National Competition. Julian Cheng, Alisha Valdivia and Jarod Wilson received top gold for their presentation on Sports Nutrition. For this event they created an entire nutrition plan for one of Newark's elite runners. Brandon Holveck. Madeline Milligan and Aileen Kerrigan also received top gold for their Illustrated Talk presentation on the hormones found in cow milk and its impact on humans.

For Alisha and Jarod, this will be their second National Competition. However, for Madeline and Julian who are also co-presidents of the club, this will be their fourth year. Mr. Feeny is hoping for another successful summer for Newark High FCCLA. These five seniors will be missed, but are all destined for great things.

Newark is proud to be represented by such upstanding students and looks forward to our growing FCCLA program.

"I'm just ready for the next step in my life," Nick Estelow said of his plans to attend Norfolk State University. "At Glasgow, they prepare you for this moment, so it's going to be good."

Graduation day an 'indescribable' feeling for Newark High students
June 3, 2015: Newark Post

Newark High School Principal Curtis Bedford's voice boomed through the Bob Carpenter Center on Tuesday evening.  "I present to you the Class of 2015!"

Then, almost as loud, if not louder, came rumbling - not from the dark clouds that hung in the air outside, but from the hundreds of friends and family members who stomped their feet and cheered for Newark High's 122nd graduating class, which included 375 students. [more]

'Sky is the limit' for Christiana High graduates
June 2, 2015: Newark Post

The mood was surreal in the hallways of the Bob Carpenter Center as Alice Solanke and her classmates waited for their high school graduation to begin.

"I thought prom was going to hit me, but it hasn't, and I'm about to graduate," Solanke said. "I'm actually about to walk across the stage."

Christiana High School graduated its 52nd class on Monday, a total of 180 students. For a class that began high school in the wake of an earthquake and a hurricane, it was only fitting that graduation took place during the first big storm of the season.  [more]
