Christina to Consider Expansion of
School Uniform Policy

The Christina School District  is considering expanding its school uniform policy to encompass all grades, after receiving direction from the Christina Board to explore the option and gather feedback from all stakeholders.

The District has already implemented school uniform policies at four of its elementary schools and all four of its middle schools. One version of the proposed expanded policy would have uniforms at all grades, Kindergarten-Grade 12. The District has begun communications outreach to Christina parents, students, staff, and community members to better gauge support for the idea. Using social media, an online survey, a paper survey, and other tools, the District hopes to gather feedback from the Christina community about the topic. This feedback would then be used to help determine a proposed policy that could be voted on by the Christina Board of Education.

The Christina Board of Education approved a pilot program at Bayard and Kirk Middle Schools in 2008-2009 that was eventually implemented in 2009 in all District middle schools. Bancroft, Elbert-Palmer, Pulaski, and Stubbs Elementary Schools also have uniform dress code policies that were implemented prior to 2008. Sarah Pyle Academy has had a uniform policy in effect since the program was established in 2005.

In many public school districts where uniform policies have been implemented, uniforms have been found to enhance school safety, improve the learning environment, bridge socioeconomic differences, promote positive behavior, and save families money.

Individuals may share feedback about the idea of expanding the uniform policy to all grades at the following email address: feedback@christina.k12.de.us or you may access the online and PDF surveys at the links below:

There is a new Doctor in the House at Leasure Elementary School

Leasure Principal, Deirdra Aikens is now Dr. Deirdra Aikens.  For the last 3 years, Dr. Aikens has worked extremely hard on researching and collecting data for her doctorate degree from the University of Delaware.  On December 9, she defended her thesis: "Presenting the Datawise process for school improvement to close the achievement gap."  After some tough questions by the committee, they overwhelmingly approved her defense and congratulated her for earning her doctorate.  Dr. Aikens returned to Leasure and was congratulated byall 600 students and staff.  Each wrote her a card and presented it to her as she "toured" the building.  Dr. Aikens is a true and inspiring example that with determination and persistence, anything can be achieved.  The Leasure family is so proud of its very own Dr. Aikens!

Kirk Business Students Participate in Stock Market Game

Students in Ms. Morris' Business class at Kirk Middle School are among the more than 1,000 students in Delaware participating in the Stock Market game.  The program is designed to teach students how the stock market works while helping them understand the importance of investing.

Each student creates his or her own hypothetical $100,000 portfolio of stocks, then tracks those stocks in a spreadsheet through each class period to analyze how the stocks are growing.  The class also has a communal portfolio that Ms. Morris uses to spur discussion, with students voting on what stocks to buy and what stocks to sell.
