Congratulations Newark High School and
Oberle Elementary School!
Student Achievement Gains Allow Both Schools
to Exit "Focus School" Status
Newark High School and Oberle Elementary School are two of nine schools statewide that have made significant gains and have met the requirements set by the Delaware Department of Education to exit state support programs, also called Focus School Status.
At Newark High School, low-income students have shown growth of more than 20 points, at almost double the pace of other subgroups. The achievement gap between low-income and non-low income students was reduced by 8.6 points.
Since the 2012-2013 school year, Oberle Elementary School has not only recovered from a drop in performance for its English learner students, but the percent of students proficient increased from 23.3 percent to 56.6 percent, showing a one-year growth gain of 33.3 percent. This is a gain of 47 percent from the school's baseline in 2010-2011. During the same time period, the school's subgroups of low-income and Hispanic students made gains of more than 26 percent and 27 percent, respectively.
Newark High School (NHS) and Oberle Elementary School administrators surprised their teachers and staff on November 4 with a breakfast at NHS and a luncheon at Oberle to celebrate their accomplishments. It was a way to acknowledge their hard work and dedication towards meeting the Focus School exit targets, and the celebrations were attended by District administrators and Department of Education Deputy Officer of School Turnaround, Brian Curtis. He highlighted the schools' successes and encouraged both schools to keep up the good work.

Christiana High School Head Soccer Coach Matt Hammond Named Coach of the Year
Matt Hammond, Head Soccer Coach for the Christiana Boys Soccer Team, has been named Coach of the Year for the Blue Hen Conference. With help from Head Coach Hammond and his coaching staff, the Christiana Varsity Boys Soccer team qualified for the state tournament for the first time in 16 years. The #9 Vikings faced #8 Sanford School at Appoquinimink High School on November 5 in the opening round of the DIAA Division II Boys Soccer State Championship. In a fast-paced game, the Vikings were defeated 2-1 by Sanford, but the team and Hammond were excited to have made it to the state finals. "I'm real proud of the kids," Hammond told the News Journal, "They fought hard right to the end. I was just telling them, whether it's soccer or whether it's life, you're going to be faced with adversity. You've got to keep battling." Christiana's record was 10-6 going into the state championship game.

Bancroft, Stubbs, and Bayard Begin
Planning for Accelerated Achievement
Christina School District's three "Priority" schools have spent the past two weeks discussing the challenges they face, and beginning to map out plans to increase student success. All three schools are focusing on ways to support accelerated achievement for all students. Although discussions have included feedback about environmental factors facing each school, the schools are addressing root causes that are within their control to change within the school environment, not those things that affect students outside of school. At all three schools, a mix of teachers, parents, community members, board members, school administrators, and district staff have met to discuss each school's strengths as well as ways changes can be implemented to increase achievement. The groups have been focusing on data analysis, looking carefully at data and trends in the areas of student proficiency and growth, discipline referrals, attendance and tardiness, teacher retention, student mobility, and parent involvement.
The District's two elementary "Priority" schools. Bancroft and Stubbs, have also been discussing how the District's Strategic Plan might align with their school-based plans. As part of its Strategic Plan, the Christina School District proposed developing a feasibility plan for an Early Education Center in Wilmington. One idea being explored is to review the grade configuration in Wilmington schools and investigate the possibility of regrouping grade levels to make a Preschool-Grade 2 Early Education school, and a Grade 3-5 elementary school. This and other ideas for an Early Education Center will continue to be explored.
For a more detailed update of the progress being made by each Priority School Planning Team, please click here.

The Brader Elementary School cafeteria frequently runs contests to support wellness and nutrition. In the most recent contest, students were given a picture of a lunch following the choosemyplate.gov format. Students needed to estimate the number of minutes they would have to play basketball to use up all of the calories in a lunch. Fourth grader Charles Hickman was the winner with the most accurate estimate. Charles is pictured with cafeteria manager Ms. Salvucci.

Brader Fourth Graders Take a Hands-on Approach to Environmental Learning
Brader Elementary School fourth graders enjoyed their field trip to the DuPont Environmental Center, where they learned how construction can have an impact on their environment. The students analyzed how the potential addition of a ramp from I-95 to the DuPont Environmental Center could adversely impact the environment. They put their map-making skills to the test when they were asked to create an aerial view of the surrounding area, experimented with the impact of erosion in different conditions, and had hands-on experiences with the plants and animals at the environmental center.

Downes Students Show Kindness to Local Seniors
October 17 was Christina School District's Day of Kindness. Students at Downes Elementary School were challenged to show kindness to each other and to participate in an outreach project. During the week of October 13-17, all grade levels worked on making "Happy Fall" or "Happy Autumn" cards. These cards were beautifully decorated with happy greetings inside. On October 27, a convoy of students, families, and staff from Downes headed over to the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Newark Manor is just around the corner from the school. Students were able to visit with the residents of the home and give them a handmade card, along with some wonderful treats donated by staff. 4th Annual Christina Middle School Soccer Championship
Caps Another Successful Season
The 4th annual Christina District Middle School Soccer Championships capped another successful season for Bayard, Gauger-Cobbs, Kirk, and Shue-Medill Middle Schools. The Shue-Medill girls team continues to be the district best winning their 4th straight title but only after the Kirk Cougars stated a strong case. Shue-Medill took early leads of 1-0, and 2-1 but Kirk continued to press and tied the game at 2 in the 2nd half. The battle went back and forth on the field until with just 3 minutes left 6th grader Paige Stevens slipped the ball past a very tough Kirk keeper to clinch the title.
The boy's final was a rematch of last year's championship game. Kirk and Gauger-Cobbs both entered the final with 5-1 records, each defeating the other during the season. In another closely fought contest Kirk jumped to an early lead but Gauger-Cobbs equalized quickly. A second goal by Cesar DelAngel-Perez put Gauger-Cobbs in the lead for good. Despite many 2nd half attacks by the Cougars, Gauger-Cobbs claimed their 3rd straight title.
In the 3rd place games the Shue-Medill boys nipped Bayard 1-0 and the Gauger-Cobbs girls pushed in a late score to defeat Bayard 2-0. As usual the games were marked with tremendous crowd support and good sportsmanship. As the hard fought girls final moved into the final minutes one of the Kirk girls took a very solidly hit ball in the face and dropped to the ground. Play stopped as a player immediately knelt next to her to make sure she was okay. That player was a Shue-Medill Tiger. We are so proud of our student-athletes for their athletic skill and competitive spirit but to witness the true spirit of sportsmanship they display is a true complement to their family, team, coaches, teachers, and school.

Rain Couldn't Dampen Middle School Band Day 2014
for Kirk Middle School and Christiana High School
On November 1, the Christiana High School and Kirk Middle School Bands celebrated Middle School Band Day. Due to the foul weather, the directors of both bands had to make a few alterations to keep the activities dry. Mr. Jeffrey Dombchik, the Christiana High School (CHS) band director, started the day by greeting Kirk Middle School families and telling them about the high school band program and what would happen at a normal marching band performance and football game.
Next, all of the Kirk and Christiana students joined together for a rehearsal of Christiana's music that we would have been playing together in the stands at the game. Students performed songs like "The Hey Song" and "The Final Countdown." Kirk even tried to keep up on the school's fight song "Christiana Loyalty." Christiana band students were helping the young Kirk band students with note fingerings and kept them from getting lost in the music. Mrs. Elizabeth Lockhart, the Kirk Middle School band director, even played along to help the saxophones.
After the rehearsal, the Kirk families and students got to listen to the CHS band perform their full halftime show in the CHS Auditorium. Even the color guard showed off their excellent flag work on the stage. The Kirk students can't wait to come back next year and look forward to keeping the 20 year tradition going for many more years to come.

Christiana Marching Band Performs in Two Local Parades
|
|
The Christiana High School (CHS) Marching Band has been very busy. On October 25, The CHS Marching Band continued its tradition of performing in the annual Timber Farms Parade. "It is a lot of fun," says Mr. Dombchik. "We have been doing this parade as a community service for the past 15 years." My students really enjoyed interacting with the little ones. There have been past CHS drum majors that marched in this parade. It has become a special event for both CHS and the Timber Farms community.
On October 26, The CHS Marching Band made a return to this year's Annual City of Newark Halloween Parade. In past years, "I had a lot of students who had Sunday commitments and could not participate," says Mr Dombchik. "It was really hard to make it work if I had students missing. I know I wanted to try it again so I put it on the calendar and it worked out the past two years. We are looking forward to attending future Newark Halloween parades."
The Christiana High School Marching Band will be finishing up its marching band season performing at the Hodgson Vo-Tech School football game and at the New Castle County Band Festival. Both events will take place on November 8. The festival will be held at A.I. Dupont High School and will start begin at 6:00 p.m. This is an hour earlier than past years. Please contact Mr. Dombchik if you are interested in purchasing tickets to the New Castle County Band Festival. They are $7.00 for adults and $4.00 students.

More than 300 Newark High School Seniors
Participate in College Application Week
Three hundred and twenty-four members of the Newark High School senior class visited the lab during College Application Week (CAW) this year. Of those, 170 submitted college applications successfully, and 329 applications were completed. Many more students started, and are still working on, applications. This does not count the applications seniors did in previous college visits or prior to College Application Week. Seniors can continue to file applications, but this lays the foundation for a very good start. It took many people to help Newark seniors accomplish so much during College Application Week. Several advisory teachers encouraged their classes to create a PowerPoint slide for the CAW lesson on Wednesday, and many advisories participated in the door decoration contest. The teachers whose advisories participated are Mrs. Oates-Wiley, Mrs. Reed, Mrs. Moore, and Mrs. Yarnall. Many teachers also brought their students to the College Fair on Tuesday, and we extend special thanks to Mrs. Reed and her teacher aides for all they did to set up the fair. Mr. Harden and his staff were also extremely helpful. College Application Week could not have been a success without the help of Jason Bedford and Ms. DeGregory, who set up the computer room. The many volunteers from colleges and the community were also extremely helpful. Many colleges provided students with fee waivers, and English teachers provided the students with preparatory assignments for CAW, so students would be able to apply without too much difficulty.

Just a few weeks later the spaghetti dinner and costume party was held at school with oodles of noodles and sauce, fun and games, and dressed up children and adults. Everyone had a great time!
