The Department of Education has named the 20 Delaware teachers who have been nominated for the state's highest classroom honor, Delaware's Teacher of the Year.
Picked from among the state's 9,000 public school teachers, the nominees represent each of the state's 19 school districts and the Charter School of Wilmington. They were selected for their "superior ability to inspire students with a love of learning, exemplary demonstration of professional traits and strong sense of dedication and devotion to teaching."
One of the candidates will be named the statewide teacher of the year during an October 21 awards banquet at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover. Evenly split, these "Priority Schools" are in the Christina School District and the Red Clay Consolidated School District respectively.
All of the Priority Schools are in Wilmington and have large populations of low-income students. Delaware Secretary of Education Mark Murphy said they were selected based on state assessment test results. [more]

Ex-Newark running back knows patience pays off October 2, 2014: The News Journal
Ose Imeokparia was overshadowed by teammates, three of whom earned Division I scholarships, during his senior football season at Newark High.
But coach Butch Simpson felt the running back's emergence "finalized that team," which went unbeaten through the regular season before a state final loss to Middletown.
"He was kind of a late arrival," said Simpson, who'd seen Imeokparia zip for 201 rushing yards on just 14 carries in a 43-35 state semifinal win over Salesianum. "Everything was late blossoming for him." [more]

Red Clay, Christina balk at state turnaround plan October 1, 2014: The News Journal
The state's proposal has outraged many local school board members, teachers and legislators, who say it blames teachers for low performance when they serve students battling poverty and violence. They also say the state's plan would deprive local districts of their authority.
"We have reached the place where we draw a line in the sand," said Christina board member Harrie Ellen Minnehan. "We can roll over and say 'here you go [Gov. Jack Markell] and [Secretary of Education Mark Murphy] take our schools and let's see what you can do.' Or do we stand resolute and stay true to our communities?" [more]

The race to become homecoming king and queen in high school is usually known for being a popularity contest, but for one high school, the homecoming tradition is taking on a new meaning.
FOX 29's Alex Holley tells the story of how the road to become crowned a king can also be a lesson of acceptance.

Christiana High making 'pitch' for soccer tournament appearance September 30, 2014: Newark Post
Most of the players on Christiana High School's soccer team were just learning how to walk the last time the Vikings made the state tournament.
Those same players are now running. And kicking. And scoring. In fact, they are doing it well enough to stir up chatter around the school campus that maybe, just maybe, this could be the year that the Vikings return to the state tournament for the first time since 1998. [more]

Downes walkathon combine fitness, fundraising September 30, 2014: Newark Post
Seven-year-old Wayne Pike ran circles around the Downes Elementary School playground Tuesday morning, stopping only to collect plastic straws from parent volunteers to mark each lap.
By the end of the 20-minute walkathon, the second-grader had collected 15 straws - which equates to 2.5 miles - leaving many of his classmates in the dust. "Usually I walk and talk with my friends, but when I'm running, I just leave them behind because I want to get laps," Wayne said with a smile, still out of breathe from his run. [more]

Brew HaHa! displays engineering student's paintings September 28, 2014: The Review
Matt Hersh is an engineering student with a passion for painting. On a fall day--over the sounds of milk being frothed and smoothies being blended--he chats about his creative experience just a few feet away from his artwork.
"I really like to use acrylic paint for realist-impressionistic painting," Hersh says. "I use brushstrokes to capture light and to capture the feeling that I want to evoke from the viewers when they are looking at my paintings."
Hersh's six paintings pinned to a burlap display board hang to his right as he describes how they came to be.
Much of Hersh's art experience derives from his AP art class. He says his teachers guided him through what art was about. This class at Newark High School was where Hersh crafted the pieces currently on display. It also sparked his interest in art and the realization that "realist-impressionistic" was his style. [ more]

Ben Campbell has Newark football back in the headlines September 25, 2014: Newark Post
It seems like forever since that unforgettable 2011 season when the Newark Yellowjackets went 11-0 before losing to Middletown in the Division I football state championship game. Perhaps what has made the past two years seem like an eternity is the limited success Newark has had on the gridiron since.
Newark finished 1-9 in 2012 and 3-7 last year, losing its first two games in each of those seasons.
But it's 2014, and senior quarterback Ben Campbell so far is enjoying an exceptional season both statistically and where he cares about the most: in the win column. [more]

As they walked off the field Friday night, Newark lineman Ethan Irons congratulated quarterback Ben Campbell. "Ben, how's 2-0 feel?" Irons asked as the two sprinted toward the locker room. Campbell's response wasn't audible from the sideline, but for the Yellowjacket faithful, the answer is obvious.
Friday's 35-21 victory over the Charter School of Wilmington gave Newark its best start since 2011, when the Yellowjackets advanced to the state finals. [more]
