Fifteen Schools Will Participate in Community Eligibility Provisions for Free School Meals
Fifteen schools in the Christina School District will be implementing a new option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision. This Provision became effective on July 1. The Community Eligibility Provision was enacted as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010, and provides universal meal service to students in schools/districts that qualify. The Community Eligibility Provision is an alternative to collecting, approving, and verifying household eligibility applications for free and reduced price meal benefits.
Students enrolled at Bancroft, Bayard, Brookside, Christina Early Education Center, Douglass, Elbert-Palmer, Gallaher, Jones, Leasure, McVey, Oberle, Pulaski, Sarah Pyle Academy, Smith, and Stubbs are automatically enrolled.
- All enrolled students are eligible to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to a student's household.
- Students will be able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee.
- Families do not need to submit a meal benefit form for child(ren) enrolled at the participating schools.
Please note: families who have children attending other Christina School District schools which are not participating in this new meal program, will be required to fill out a meal benefit form to be eligible for free/reduced meal pricing at those locations. For more information, please contact us at Child Nutrition Services at 454-2400 x43206.

Marshall Elementary Principal Gives Away
Free Summer Books in the WOW Bus
On July 28 and 30 Marshall Elementary School Principal Norman Kennedy distributed free books to students in the surrounding community. Mr. Kennedy worked with Christina's transportation department and district office and used the WOW Bus to set up in several locations, setting aside one hour visits. Over the two days, he distributed over 175 books to new and current students.
"Parents were complimentary of the service and it was a chance to meet new students and say hello to familiar faces." said Kennedy. My wife Karen and daughter Lucy assisted with passing out books."
Parents were informed of the locations through the school's ParentLink service. They set up in the Marshall Parking lot, Salem Woods Weiss Park, and at Happy Kids Academy Daycare.
"Summer reading is so important to our elementary students, and by giving away the books I model the importance of reading. I intend to continue the tradition next year," Kennedy said.

Taking Our Streets Back Basketball Tournament
Involves Stubbs Elementary School,
Wilmington Police and Team Crossover Elite
On August 16, Team Crossover Elite, in partnership with the Christina School District's Stubbs Elementary School and the Wilmington Police Department, held its first Taking Our Streets Back basketball tournament. The event was also the kick off for the Lil' Dribblers Basketball League beginning Saturday August 23 at Stubbs Elementary School.

The league's Science class is being taught by scientists and chemists who are volunteering their time to teach kids. The Reading program is for all participants and coaches achieving the League's goal, which is to read 500 books. The league will also help with creating its very own community magazine and welcomes all coaches that want to help and be a part of our vision: A league that's preparing our kids not only on the court, but also doing its part to keep our kids out of court. Lil' Dribblers Basketball League is the league of the future...join the MOVEMENT!

Dawn Martinez and Barbara Martin Named Volunteers of the Year for CHS Athletic Department
Christiana High School's Athletic Department has selected parents Dawn Martinez and Barbara Martin as its "Volunteers of the Year" for the 2013-2014 school year. They were honored (and surprised) during CHS' Fall Sports Parent Information Night/Meet the Coaches on Tuesday, August 12.
Ms. Martinez is a longtime volunteer of the Vikings boys' lacrosse team, where her son is a former player, as well as the girls' volleyball program, where her daughter, Georgina Martinez, is a current participant. For the last two years, Martinez has coordinated the athletic concession stand program, working tirelessly to insure that the concession stands were staffed during home football games, and making sure food and drinks were ordered and stocked. In addition, she generously donates her time and energy for many events at the school.
Ms. Martin has been involved with Christiana Athletics for many years with the football, volleyball, and softball programs. Her daughter, Sam Martin, is a junior this school year and her son is a CHS graduate and former football player. The Christiana HS Athletic Department thanks Dawn and Barbara for all of their hard work, dedication and countless hours they have spent making sure the concession stand operates efficiently so that the revenues can help support CHS athletics!

Three Newark High School Athletes Compete in
Junior League World Series
Three students from Newark High School traveled to Taylor, Michigan for the Junior League World Series August 8-17. Sophomore, Drew Emory and incoming freshmen, Nate Simpson and Nick Zegna had the baseball summer of their lives when their Newark National Little League Junior All-Star team began competing in June in the district tournament where they won 3 out of 5 games to become the District 2 champs.
Next, they came out of the loser's bracket in the State tournament and became Delaware State champions with a record of 3-1.They dominated through the East Regional tournament held in Freehold, NJ competing against Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Maryland to become the East Region champion which earned them a spot in the Junior League World Series. This tournament is the "big brother" to the Little League World Series held in Williamsport, PA in which the players are 11 and 12 years old. The boys played in games against Michigan, California, Texas, North Carolina and the Czech Republic, winning three. They spent ten days with the boys from these teams and the teams from Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Curacao, and Canada. Congratulations on a most successful and enriching, international experience!

Delaware School for the Deaf to Participate in Macy's Shop for a Cause ~ Saturday, August 23
The Delaware Statewide Programs Association (DSPA) is asking for your help to raise funds to support Delaware families of children with deaf-blindness. There are currently 77 families in Delaware that have been identified as having a child between the ages of birth through 21 who are deaf-blind. This means that the child has a combined vision and hearing loss significant enough that a Teacher of the Visually Impaired cannot help to compensate for the hearing loss and that a Teacher of Deaf/Hard of Hearing cannot help to compensate for the vision loss. Of the individuals who meet the criteria of deaf-blindness and are able to receive specialized services, approximately 80 to 85 percent of that population would meet the definition of being severely disabled due to medical, orthopedic and neurological complications. There are very few resources for receiving training and support for the schools providing education to these individuals and even fewer support/services for the families.
Each shopping pass is to be sold for $5.00 and DSPA keeps 100% of the money raised. All monies raised will be used for the 2014 Family Learning Weekend conference. The shopping pass enables you to save 25% all day on regular, sale and clearance items. You can also save 10% on electrics/electronics, watches, furniture, mattresses and rugs/floor coverings. If you are interested in purchasing a shopping pass, please contact Karen Robinson at DSPA - (302) 454-2305 / robinsonk@christina.k12.de.us. To help promote this great cause, please feel free to use any social media outlet to help spread the word.

State Seeks Volunteers to
Help Students with College Applications
The Delaware Department of Education, preparing for the state's third annual College Application Month this fall, needs volunteers to support students as they prepare their college applications. The dates volunteers are needed are between October 13 and November 21, 2014. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least a 2-hour time period, and they must review several training resources before volunteering at a school. These resources include a Volunteer Handbook, a school-specific Volunteer Resource Guide which will be provided for you after signing-up, and watching a training webinar.
To provide help, volunteers do not need to be experts on the college application process. They are needed to greet and sign-in students, assist with the completion of online college applications and assist counselors and teachers during the event. Please visit the following link to find out more: http://www.delawaregoestocollege.org/sign-volunteer
For more information on volunteering, contact IPA's Kelly L. Sherretz at (302) 831-4271.
