Current 10th and 11th grade students in the Christina School District are encouraged to apply to the College Readiness Scholars Institute (CRSI), a free, 14-day residential program to prepare students for college by living on the UD campus, learning from UD professors, and being inspired to succeed by peer counselors and residential advisors. The dates of CRSI are Sunday, July 27 through Saturday, August 9. There is no minimum GPA requirement, and students who may be the first in their families to attend college are especially encouraged to apply. Tuition, textbooks, dorm fees, and food expenses are all covered by the Christina School District. The only cost is a $25 application fee. This is a unique opportunity that is only available to students from the Christina School District.
There are a limited number of spaces in the CRSI, and not all applicants will be accepted into the program. Students who participate will receive transferable college credit (when a grade of "C" or better is earned). Students will also receive high school elective credit for the coursework. Keene Elementary School Student Braeden Mannering is One of 27 National Finalists for the Lead 360 Challenge Award
Braeden Mannering, a fourth grade student at Keene Elementary School, is one of only 27 finalists chosen to be considered for the Lead 360 Challenge Award presented by the Jefferson Awards for Public Service. Lead 360 Challenge recognizes and awards individuals and groups who have demonstrated exceptional leadership through youth service projects. Braeden's outreach project to the hungry and homeless called 3B: Brae's Brown Bags, is one of just three nominees in the Hunger & Poverty category.

Christina School District STEM Expo and Title I Conference Saturday, May 10 ~ 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Glasgow High School
The Christina School District will host its second annual STEM Expo event on Saturday, May 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is intended for Christina students and families in grades K-12, and will take place concurrently with the District's annual Title I Parent Conference. It will be held at Glasgow High School, located at 1901 South College Avenue (Route 896) in Newark.
STEM activities, Star Lab, 3-D Printer demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, and other events will be held throughout the day. Vendors include Delaware STEM Council, Brandywine Zoo, Iron Hill Museum, Hagley Museum, Apple Computer, Delaware Tech, and the University of Delaware Engineering Department.
The Expo will feature interactive events and exhibits, awards' ceremonies, information tables, presentations, and opportunities for students and families to explore STEM education in the Christina School District through fun, interactive activities. Some of the highlights:
- Lt. Governor Matt Denn will give a Keynote Address at 8:45 a.m.
- Elementary, Middle and High School Numbers Bees will be held at 9:00 a.m.
- Final Judging for the Elementary Science and Engineering Fair will be held
at 9:15 a.m. - Title I Workshops will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
- A Star Lab Exhibit will begin at 11:00 a.m.
- Judson Wagner, Delaware STEM Council Co-Chair, will speak at 1:00 p.m.
Transportation is provided from several locations in Wilmington (Bayard and Bancroft) and Newark (Wilson and Oberle/Leasure). Buses will begin at 7:45 a.m. and the last pick up from schools will be at 1:30 p.m.

Superintendent Williams Visits Christiana High School's
Richard Ferenz During Teacher Appreciation Week
Christina School District Superintendent Dr. Freeman Williams extended his personal thanks to Richard Ferenz of Christiana High School on May 6, as part of Teacher Appreciation Week celebrations. Mr. Ferenz has taught in the Christina School District for 40 years, longer than any other teacher in the district. Mr. Ferenz is a teacher and department chair in the Agriculture Technology department, which provides opportunities for students to study topics in agricultural science and horticulture, including a Plant and Horticultural Science pathway offering courses and career preparation in horticulture science and floriculture. Also pictured is Christiana High School Principal, Noreen LaSorsa.
To help celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, the Delaware Department of Education (DOE) asked each superintendent in the state to submit a photo with a teacher in his or her district. DOE is also encouraging Delawareans to thank the educators making a difference in their lives, families and communities during Teacher Appreciation Week, and to share photographs and words of thanks with them so they can share them more broadly. The Department of Education will be posting entries on its DelExcels website throughout the week of May 5-9. Email entries to DelExcels@doe.k12.de.us.

Public Forums Scheduled on New Student Manual
May 15 and 21
The new, comprehensive Student Manual publication is intended to outline expectations for student behavior, discipline interventions, and consequences. The Student Manual will also help the District meet the requirements of the Resolution Agreement with the United States Office for Civil Rights. The draft document is now available for parents to review on the District website by clicking here. Copies of the draft document have been provided to schools in English and Spanish.
Two Public Forums are scheduled in May to allow members of the public to share feedback. All are encouraged to attend the Public Forums and continue the discussion about the Student Manual. Christina School District Student Art to be Featured at
Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts ~ June 6-8
Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) at the Riverfront in Wilmington will host an art show that will feature art from the schools in Christina School District. Art teachers in the District will submit up to four student art pieces to be exhibited.
The opening reception will be Friday, June 6, from 5:00-9:00 p.m. and it will be part of Art on the Town. Saturday hours are 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday hours are 12:00-5:00 p.m. All are invited. There is no admission charge but DCCA does welcome voluntary contributions.

Christina Bus Driver Takes
Third Place in
Annual "School Bus Roadeo"
The 25th Annual School Bus Roadeo was held on May 3 at Smyrna High School. Thirty-eight school bus drivers competed in two categories: district driver and contractor driver.
The school bus safety competition is designed to recognize excellence in school bus drivers while demonstrating skills needed in their demanding jobs. Five Christina School District drivers participated in the competition: Nate Benn, Crystle Guyer, Billy McLauren, Leonard Moody and Lisa Reed.
Events during the competition included: Written Test, Bugged Bus, Offset Alley, Railroad Crossing, Straight Line, Right Turn, Back-in to a Dock, Parallel Park, Decreasing Clearance, and Bus Stop. All contestants received a certificate of participation.
Lisa Reed from the Christina School District came in third place overall and received a plaque provided by the Delaware Association of Pupil Transportation Officials.

CEEC Prekindergarten Students Celebrate School Lunch Hero Day
On May 5, the full-day prekindergarten students at the Christina Early Education Center (CEEC) showed their appreciation to Ms. Letty, Lead Cafeteria Worker, in honor of School Lunch Hero Day as part of School Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week. The students made a variety of posters and crafts in their classrooms and surprised Ms. Letty with them during lunch time on Monday. Ms. Letty is such an integral part of the CEEC family as she means so much more to the CEEC community than her work in the cafeteria. Many thanks to Ms. Letty for all of her hard work and support of our students!

Prekindergarten Annual Spring Concert a Huge Success!
The prekindergarten students at the Christina Early Education Center (CEEC) held their Annual Spring Music Concert on April 16. Each pod consisting of 3-4 classrooms practiced and performed songs in front of a standing room only audience at Kirk Middle School. Families, staff, and students were excited to see the students for a night of family fun!

Brader Staff Members Attend the Jefferson Awards 360 Challenge
This year, the Brader Elementary School Student Council and Delaware Autism Program (DAP) collaborated to submit a service project to be considered for a Jefferson Award. The project, entitled "Light it Up Blue at Brader," promoted student understanding about autism, and the student council raised money to purchase Brader Buddy Benches. Christina School District Superintendent Dr. Freeman Williams, Assistant Principal Mrs. Kelly, School Counselor Mrs. Ball, and DAP Paraprofessional Mrs. Sartori attended the Jefferson Awards 360 Challenge event at the University of Delaware. Brader received an award for participating in the event, and plans on doing another project next year.

Gallaher Elementary 3rd Graders Explore the
History and Artifacts of Old New Castle
Gallaher Elementary School 3rd graders spent the day touring the George Read House in Old New Castle. The students explored the artifacts and primary source documents of the house to discover the story of three families and servants who lived and worked in the house since 1803. The students also strolled along the historic cobblestone streets and brick alleys surrounding the Read House and Gardens to learn more about daily life from the 1600's to the 1800's in New Castle.

Stubbs Elementary Hosts Annual Spring Career Fair
On May 2, Stubbs Elementary School, in partnership with Educational Data Systems, Inc. (EDSI) held its Annual Spring Career Fair. Several employers, including Aflac, Lowe's, Downtown Visions, YMCA of Delaware, Securitas, 1-800-Got-Junk, Sheraton Hotel and American Beauty Academy, were in attendance to meet and greet over 100 job seekers. The Career Fair was a great success for Wilmington's East Side Community.

Gauger-Cobbs Business Professionals of America Chapter Earns High Marks at National Conference
Eighth Grader Kyra Hartland was National First-Place Winner
The Gauger-Cobbs Middle School BPA Club had an outstanding but very exhausting trip last week to the National BPA Conference in Indianapolis. Every day was non-stop and every evening was full of activities. The students were exceptional, handling themselves as business professionals and conducting themselves in a very mature manner. They networked with other students from middle and high schools and communicated amongst their peers, sharing ideas and increasing their confidence levels. They were very responsible throughout the conference, and took their competitions very seriously.
Eighth grader Kyra Hartland was awarded a national First Place award in the Entrepreneurship Exploration category at the middle school level.
Delaware received the Middle Level AND Secondary National Professional Cups this year. The Delaware BPA Middle Level has received the Professional Cup several years in a row because of fundraising for Special Olympics, BPA Cares (fundraisers and community services) and member recruiting.
"These conferences are amazing for students because it allows them to explore something about themselves that they never realized they had," said advisor Taren Harmon.

 Gauger-Cobbs Middle School TSA Team Places in Top Ten
Gauger-Cobbs Middle School's most recent TSA Competition was the State competition held at Harrington Fair Grounds on April 29 and 30. The competition resulted in several top three and top ten awards in various categories. Eighth grader Nick Cabrera also earned the honor of having the fastest middle school car in the state in the Dragster Racer category, and eighth grader Darrion Fisher-Logan was recognized for the Best Rocket Flight. The team will now advance to the national TSA competition, to be held June 27-July 2 in Washington, D.C.

Kirk Middle School Flea Market/Craft Show
Saturday, May 10 ~ 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
The Flea Market/Craft Show will be held in the Kirk Middle School parking lot (weather permitting) from 8:00 am- 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 10. The school is located at 140 Brennen Drive in Newark. Christiana High School Basketball Teams
Help Ronald McDonald House
The girls and boys basketball teams at Christiana High School (CHS) visited the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington the weekend of May 3 to help families in need. The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware provides a "home away from home" for families with children in nearby hospitals. CHS players and coaches planted flower pots throughout the outdoor facility and assisted with yard work. In addition, the teams took a tour to learn more about the history of the Ronald McDonald House, and each team raised and donated $200.

Three Christiana High School Juniors Attend DuPont's Explore Engineering Day
On May 1, Sitta Dunbar, Alice Solanke, and Michelle Reyes, three juniors from Christiana High School, attended the Explore Engineering Day at DuPont. The event was designed to encourage more women to become engineers and to learn about the diversity of jobs that engineers perform. The students were assigned to teams with students from other high schools which then brainstormed and solved simple engineering problems such as designing a switch for a dance pad, making a kicking machine, or a solar car. The students also had an opportunity to learn from six female engineers the career paths they took to become employed at DuPont.

As part of Christiana High School's ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship at CHS, 2-3 athletes are recognized each month for demonstrating fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship during competition. Plaques, courtesy of Crown Trophy, were presented to the Vikings' April Sportsmanship award winners! Congratulations to Isis Graham, 12th grade (Softball), Viralkumar Patel, 12th grade (Tennis), and Georgina Martinez, 9th grade (Girls Lacrosse).

Glasgow High School Annual Spring Concert
May 13 ~ 7:00 p.m.
On May 13, the Glasgow High School (GHS) Music Department will be presenting its Annual Spring Concert at 7:00 pm in the GHS Auditorium. The evening will feature performances by the Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Chorus, Steel Band, Orchestra, Canterbury Chorus and Concert Band. Admission is free.

Jobs for Delaware Graduates Awards Ceremony
The Delaware Career Association and Jobs for Delaware Graduates (JDG) held its Awards Ceremony on May 2 at Glasgow High School. The awards ceremony honored students for their achievements through training in Jobs for Delaware Graduates and Involvement in the Delaware Career Association. By participating, students are members of a select group who have demonstrated leadership, determination and career preparation. The advisor is Mr. Michael Richardson.

Glasgow High School Recognizes Students for Earning 3rd Quarter Honor Roll Status
Glasgow High School recently held its awards assembly and breakfast to celebrate the accomplishments of Glasgow students that earned Distinguished Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Athletic Honor Roll and Marching Band Honor Roll for the third marking period. Athletic and Marching Band Honor Roll recipients earned distinguished honors for earning superior academic achievement while participating in extracurricular activities.

Glasgow High School Students Participate in Student Forum with Superintendent Williams
Glasgow High School students recently participated in a student forum with Christina Superintendent Dr. Freeman Williams. The forum offered the students an opportunity to discuss the New Student Manual which will be replacing the current Student Code of Conduct for the 2014-2015 school year.

Glasgow High School Sports Highlights: Week of April 28-May 3
Varsity Boys' Lacrosse - The Dragons defeated Dickinson High School 13-3. The team played a great all around game and display great sportsmanship. Logan Malloy scored four goals. Nick Coleman and John Lewis each scored three goals while Thomas Bolin and Trevor Harrison scored a goal each.
Varsity Girls' Lacrosse - The Lady Dragons lost to AI DuPont High School 4-15. Even so, Coach Miller called it the best game of the season that her young team has played thus far. Michaela Vanderslice scored three goals and Ashley Baaden scored one goal for the team. The young team lost to Caravel Academy 2-19, but again, stand-outs included Micheala Vanderslice scoring two goals for the team, and Ashley Gibson finishing the game with twelve saves.
Varsity Softball - The Lady Dragons defeated Delaware Public Safety and Security 17-1. On a special evening, the team played a great game and gave our three seniors their last home win as a Dragon. Kyleigh Morris, Mamako Johnson and Megan Smith played their last home game as part of the Dragon's family. We are extremely proud of you, ladies and wish you great success in the future. Remember that you will forever be a Glasgow Dragon!
Varsity Baseball - The Dragons and Dickinson High School passed the lead back and forth five times on Tuesday but in the end the Dragons pulled out an 8-4 win in six innings over Dickinson High School. Aaron Coates struck out seven players and scored a double. Mike Hand had a single for the Dragons. The Dragons lost to William Penn High School 2-5 despite a great performance by Aaron Coates. Aaron pitched a complete game striking out 17 and giving up 5 hits.
Girls' Tennis - The team defeated McKean High School 3-2. Jackie Cornejo defeated her opponent in the 2nd Singles 6-2, 6-2. Samantha Hogan defeated her opponent in the 3rd Singles 6-0, 7-6. Rebecca Hall and Abigaie Hamilton defeated their opponents in the 2nd Doubles 7-6, 7-6.
Boys' Track & Field - The team competed in the Caravel Invitational. Kwasi Amponsah finished 1st in the 100 m. Raul Romero and Alexandre Nieves finished 1st in the 800 m. Shareef Flowers finished 1st in the Shot Put.

Glasgow and Newark High School Students
Receive Rank of Eagle Scout
Congratulations to Joseph Disk, Glasgow High School and Evan Cox, Newark High School on receiving the rank of Eagle Scout. Joe and Evan have been best friends since 1st grade when they met at McVey Elementary School. They joined Cub Pack 92 that same year, then crossed to Boy Scout Troop 56 together in 2007 where they began their trail to Eagle. Joe's Eagle project involved the renovation of the Pollinator Garden and building an armadillo cage for the Brandywine Zoo. Evan's project was the refurbishment of the Charles Eastman Trail located behind First Presbyterian Church in Newark (clearing the trail, fixing benches, installing erosion control and creating a new trail sign.) The projects were completed last fall and both Joe and Evan had their Eagle Board of Review on January 7, 2014. Evan's Court of Honor took place on March 29 and Joe's was held on May 4. These young men will continue to follow similar paths, as they are both pursuing careers in flight. Joe will attend the University of Delaware College of Engineering where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace Engineering. Evan will attend the University of North Dakota Aerospace, where he will double major in Commercial Flight and Unmanned Aerial Systems.

Newark Wins Men's Blue Hen Conference
Track and Field Championships
The Newark Men's track team forged a powerful team effort to dominate the Blue Hen Conference Championship at Appoquinimink High School. In the competition, which brought together all 18 teams from Flight A and Flight B, Newark scored with top 6 finishes in all but one event to win by a margin of 106 to 65 over runner up William Penn. The 4 X 800 meter relay team of Daniel Mwaniki, Andrew Milham, Chris Kitson, and Jarod Wilson got things started by winning that event. Jarod and Chris would come back later in the meet to take 1-2 in the metric mile. Andrew later placed 3rd in the 3200 meters. Daniel placed 4th in the open 800 meters. Senior Keith Stubbs won the discus title for the 3rd consecutive year and took 2nd in the shot put. Roland Attoh-Okine won the 300 meter hurdles, finished 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles and teamed with Eric Wright, Austin Lockett and Jibri Pipkin to finished 3rd in the 4 X 200 meter relay. Eric Wright also placed 3rd individually in the 100 meter dash. Sophomore Marcus Perkins scored in 3 events, the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Freshman Brian Sutton came through with a big personal best in the pole vault, good for 6th and final scoring place in that event.
The Newark Women's track and field team concluded the Blue Hen Conference championship at Appoquinimink High School finishing in 6th place overall with a total of 38 points. Sophomore Rachel Beston won the 1600 meter race, and freshman Halimah Roberson was 2nd in the 400 meter dash to lead the Yellowjackets.

Newark High School Wins Delaware Career Association's Community Service Award for Fifth Year in a Row
The Delaware Career Association's Newark High School (NHS) Chapter had another outstanding showing at the recent statewide competitive events. The NHS Chapter placed First in Community Service, logging 3,497 hours between April 1, 2013 and April 1, 2014. This is the students' fifth year in a row winning first place in this category. In addition, Charles Albright and Elijah Davis earned 9th place in Personal Budgeting, and La Dai Sha Carter placed 11th in Job Survival Skills.

On Thursday, May 15, the Newark High School PTSA will be hosting its Annual Spring Luncheon as a way of saying THANKS for another year of service to Newark High School. We would welcome an assortment of salads: pasta, bean, carrot, wild rice, broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, cole slaw, spinach. If your passion is desserts consider making your favorite dessert or cookie for this event. Maybe you have a few hours to help out with volunteer time - we need assistance with set-up, serving, and clean-up. Part of our spring luncheon tradition includes raffling of gift baskets -- do you have a business? a creative flair? or a great idea? Please consider putting together a basket to be used as part of the raffle.
Too busy this time of year with work, graduations, sports banquets but still want to help? Then please consider a monetary donation to support the luncheon and say "we appreciate the NHS Staff". Newark High School Students Move on to Regional Finals in Business Plan Competition
On May 6, Newark High School students Jhaney Hamlett, Steven Martinez, and Brett Zicarelli traveled to SAP America, Inc. headquarters in Newton Square, Pennsylvania and participated in the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Philadelphia Semi -Finals Regional Business Plan Competition. Competing with forty other students, Jhaney Hamlett (Heated Hoodies) and Steven Martinez (Prestige Kids Empire Dance) were chosen as two of 9 winners out of 40 total contestants for the NFTE Philadelphia Final Regional Business Plan Competition to be held May 21. At the regional competition, the students will compete for 1st place ($1, 000), 2nd place ($500), and 3rd place ($250) prizes. In addition, Brett Zicarelli (EZ Lawn Care) received two Philadelphia Phillies baseball tickets for the May 16 game, provided by the NFTE program.

Sarah Pyle Academy Breaks Ground on Peace Garden
Before Spring Break, Sarah Pyle Academy began to lay the foundation for the school's Peace Garden. The flower garden and patio space will be used by students as a "classroom without walls." Students will be exposed to the natural elements of the garden while using its resources to supplement and enhance their learning experience. Sarah Pyle would like to personally thank the Christina School District Grounds Maintenance Department who were a wonderful asset at the beginning stages of the garden. Bob Dougherty from Angerstein's Building Supply donated landscape materials for the project, and Gerber Masonry installed the garden wall. Within the next few weeks, the Sarah Pyle community will begin planting seeds of learning, peace, and change. The school is excited to share this new project with our students and the local community!
