Brader Elementary School Handicapped Accessible Garden Dedication Scheduled for August 21

Brader Elementary School is pleased to announce the dedication of the school's Handicapped Accessible Garden on Wednesday, August 21 at 4:00 pm.  The garden was made possible thanks to the Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids School Garden Grant which gave the school $2,000 to fund the handicapped accessible garden. The Whole Kids Foundation School Garden Grant Program explains the grant was awarded because Brader Elementary School exemplified a viable, sustainable, and well-supported garden that, most importantly, is able to be integrated into student's learning for years to come!

Vote for Gallaher Elementary Principal as iEducate Finalist!

Jacqueline Lee, principal of Gallaher Elementary School has been nominated as an iEducate Delaware honoree.  Lee developed a program at Gallaher Elementary School that has now received state-recognition, called Gallaher Positive Action (GPA). According to the description of the program "This program teaches students that a positive, productive lifestyle has many aspects and yields academic success.  The program has a four-pillar structure with supports for each pillar. The first pillar targets behavioral expectations through our PBS model. The next pillar of the GPA program is physical health. We have increased our physical activity of each student to 175 minutes a week, including a "Jammin' Minute" where all students in the school move to various beats on the morning announcements, and take turns around the school's track before recess. The third pillar of the GPA program is making healthy eating choices. Finally, the fourth and most important pillar is healthy mental well-being. To help our students have a healthy mental outlook, we incorporate a Positive Action Curriculum designed to teach students replacement behaviors and thought patterns to help boost self-confidence."

You can vote for Mrs. Lee at the following website link up until September 9:  http://bit.ly/19vQg8b.  Winner will be awarded a $2,000 grant.

Klondike Kate's Helps REACH and Entitlement Program Students Celebrate the End of Summer School!

On August 1, Klondike Kate's restaurant on Main Street in Newark treated students and teachers in the REACH and Entitlement Program at the Smith Elementary School Summer School Site to a lunch of their choice.  Students enjoyed chicken tenders, grilled cheese, wings, and ice cream. The special delivery came about because the students took a field trip to Klondike Kate's earlier in the week and the restaurant staff wanted the students to know how much they enjoyed having them visit and can't wait until they come back next summer! The Smith Elementary School Summer School program sends a big thank you to Klondike Kate's for the delicious lunch!

Brandywine Product Group and Big Brothers Big Sisters
Help Beautify Stubbs Elementary School

On July 25th, 30 employees from Brandywine Product Group (BPG), partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Stubbs Elementary School to beautify the front of the school for the upcoming school year.  With rakes, flowers, and over 10 yards of mulch donated from Copeland Mulch Depot in tow, BPG volunteers cleared trash, pulled weeds, dug up roots from cut down trees, planted flowers and laid down mulch to transform the once dim landscaping that framed the front of Stubbs Elementary School.  The scene was reminiscent of the TV show "Yard Crashers" on HGTV before the exciting reveal.  A little elbow grease and lots of volunteer power yielded wonderful results.  Thank you, BPG for giving Stubbs an awesome new start to the school year.
