World Language Immersion Program for Kindergarten Students Offered at Downes and Pulaski Elementary Schools

Two elementary schools in the Christina School District have been chosen to participate in the World Language Immersion Program for entering Kindergarten students beginning in the 2013-2014 school year. Downes Elementary School in Newark will offer Mandarin Chinese, and Pulaski Elementary School in Wilmington will offer Spanish. Both programs will be available to Kindergarten students as an option.

This is an elementary immersion program, where students learn academic content through a second language. They learn the second language by encountering and using the language in multiple meaningful contexts. For example, students will have reading instruction in English, but may have instruction in math and other subjects in Mandarin Chinese or Spanish. Students will spend half of the school day immersed in English instruction, and half of the day in Chinese or Spanish. Classes will have two teachers, one for each language, and will coexist with traditional instruction. Students will be able to continue their immersion experience through elementary school and into middle school.

The World Language Immersion Program began as an initiative by Delaware Governor Jack Markell in 2012, who invested $1.9 million in the program with the goal of reaching nearly 8,000 students in K-8 immersion programs by 2020. The program began in 2012 with 4 schools, and with the addition of Christina's two schools the program will expand in 2013 to include a total of 10 programs throughout the state. The programs will be available to families currently residing in the Downes Elementary and Pulaski Elementary feeder patterns, and some limited Kindergarten choice options may be available. For more information, please contact the Department of Teaching and Learning at 302-552-2664.

Children must be five years old on or before August 31, 2013 to be eligible to attend Kindergarten.
