As you know, the Indiana Senate will consider Senate Bill 251 on
Tuesday, January 26, 2016. This is very exciting news for the thousands of Indiana families who want their children to attend afterschool, before-school, or summer programming.

The benefits of out-of-school time programming are numerous:
  • Afterschool programs keep kids safe and reduce the likelihood that kids will commit crimes, use drugs or become teen parents.
  • 87% of Indiana parents of both parties recognize that afterschool is a wise investment and support public funding of these programs.
  • Afterschool programs give working parents peace of mind and help them keep their jobs by ensuring that children are safe and engaged in learning while parents are still at work.
  • Afterschool programs provide learning opportunities that help kids succeed in school.
Authored by Sens. Dennis Kruse, R-14, Ronald Grooms, R-46, Carlin Yoder, R-12Senate Bill 251 would establish an out-of-school learning time grant program and create an advisory committee of experts and stakeholders to study best practices and make recommendations to the 2017 General Assembly.

This is an important first step in improving access, quality, and affordability of after school, before school and summer programs for Indiana's children.
