Indiana's 15th Annual Lights On Afterschool a HUGE Success!
This year there were 81 events in Indiana! In addition, Governor Mike Pence issued an official proclamation (pdf) making Oct. 23 #LightsOnAfterschool Day!

INDIANA LIGHTS ON HIGHLIGHT: Columbus Out-of-School Coalition Celebrates FIRST Lights On as a Community 
The event was held at the Kids Commons and featured hands-on STEM activities for students from Pre-K through 6th grade.  Nearly 300 people attended.  Students explored the museum for free and engaged in STEM activities including building a bridge, making a bionic hand, experimenting with electricity and making "slime".

New $150,000 award opportunity: The Trust Challenge

The Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) and the MacArthur Foundation have announced their fifth Digital Media and Learning Competition-the Trust Challenge: Building Trust in Connected Learning Environments. The Trust Challenge will award a total of $1.2 million-in $10,000 to $150,000 year-long development grants-to institutions and organizations that look to answer questions around trust, privacy, safety and learning in an open online world. Applications will be accepted Sept. 3 to Nov. 3, 2014. Info HERE.
 
USGA/Alliance: Grants for the Good of the Game

The National Alliance for Accessible Golf (Alliance) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) believe that golf should be open to everyone and support a wide variety of programs that create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in the sport. They especially encourage inclusive programming-- opportunities that allow participants with disabilities and participants without disabilities to learn and play the game side by side. Maximum award: $20,000. Eligibility: tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations as defined under Section SOl(c) 3 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code or government entities such as public schools or municipalities. Deadline: Rolling

The PeyBack Foundation supports programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for at-risk children in Denver, Indiana, Louisiana, and Tennessee. Lilly Endowment is currently accepting applications for its 2015 Teacher Creativity Fellowship. The Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program provides support for K-12 teachers, principals, guidance counselors and school librarians in Indiana to take time during the summer to pursue a personal interest, explore subjects that interest them, and re-energize before returning to the classroom in the fall. Advancing Student Achievement, a program of the Actuarial Foundation
ASA grants support math programs that open students' minds to the practical power of math. The purpose of an ASA grant is to support math enhancement programs that bridge the gap between classroom and real world mathematics.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
This program annually honors middle and high school students in the US who volunteer in their communities at home or abroad. National honorees receive $5,000 from the Prudential Foundation for a charitable organization of their choice. Students in grades 5-12 are eligible to apply for the 2015 awards if they have volunteered in the past year. Learn more HERE.

Youth Research for Action will award, on a competitive basis, grants to youth-designed and -led action research projects across the U.S. The competition is open to teams of public high school students nationwide, along with youth in community-based organizations.  Deadline: November 26, 2014 Amount: up to $2,000 More HERE.

The Bright House Classroom Innovators Grants
is an ongoing program to assist innovative educators with classroom needs. The program is available to educators who teach K-12 curriculum at public and private schools or at an afterschool nonprofit program that are within Bright House Networks service areas. Recipients are eligible to receive up to one grant per year of no less than $250 and no greater than $500, to assist in their efforts to move students toward a brighter future through innovative learning.

NGA: Youth Garden Grants

National Gardening Association Youth Garden Grants support schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize educational focus or curricular/program integration; nutrition or plant-to-food connections; environmental awareness/education; entrepreneurship; and social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning. Maximum award: a $500 gift card to the Gardening with Kids catalog, seeds and plants from Bonnie Plants, an Ames tool package, and educational materials from NGA.

This one-day program introduces girls in sixth through ninth grades to many types of careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and teaches "savvy skills" such as leadership and smart internet use. 2nd Annual City of Indianapolis VEX Robotics Championship (IndyVRC) and STEM Community Fair sponsored by Roche Diagnostics on November 16 & 17, 2013 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse
The IndyVRC engages 48 high schools and 40 middle schools competing in a sports-like game. Teams of students have been working alongside engineers and other industry professionals to design, build, and program a robot to compete against robots from other teams.  Teams can win awards for creating business plans, developing cohesive team "brands," and cooperating with other teams.
Sunday= IndyVRC STEM Community Fair. The stem fair will include interactive, hands-on, STEM based-activities that are fun for the whole family. Check them out in between matches.

The Hour of Code is coming... worldwide!
Last year, 40,000 teachers led a grassroots effort called the Hour of Code - to introduce ten million students to one hour of computer science. Kids of all ages tried one hour of writing code and making apps in classrooms, and they loved it. This year, supported by over 100 organizations, we want you to help reach 100 million students, across every country in the world, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec 8 - 14). Technovation
is a technology entrepreneurship program and competition for young women. Through our intensive 3-month, 50-hour curriculum, teams of young women work together to imagine, design, and develop mobile apps, then pitch their "startup" businesses to judges. Google CS First
is a program that focuses on increasing student access and exposure to computer science education. The goal of this program is to utilize afterschool and summer programs to build a computer science education foundation in K-12 schools. CS First is a free and gives students the opportunity to learn computer science concepts through coding. NASA Ignite! Free Curriculum and Training in Indiana

You don't have to be a STEM expert to facilitate fun, hands-on activities to help kids learn about survival in space, how to train like an astronaut, rocketry, and much more. NASA Ignite provides free staff training and easy to implement curricula, games, and videos for afterschool, summer and in-school learning. Each activity gives you a lesson plan, list of supplies, and estimated preparation/implementation time. In-person trainings, weekly webinars, and customized support are free, through a NASA Summer of Innovation grant. AFTERSCHOOL RESOURCES 

       

After School Matters is looking for volunteers with experience in science, technology, art, writing, sports, or youth development to assist with the critical task of reviewing and scoring proposals for the Summer 2015, Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 teen programs. These program proposals are submitted to ASM by potential instructors and include a synopsis of what they plan to teach, as well as accompanying activities and goals they have for the teens in their program.
 
This volunteer opportunity is completely web-based and can be performed anywhere a volunteer has internet access. Each volunteer will be assigned 5-6 proposals, and we estimate that the total time commitment to score those proposals will be approximately 6-7 hours total. The review process will begin on November 17, 2014 and will go until December 5, 2014.

PRISM
is a free website that provides collections of online resources for Indiana educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The primary collection of digital teaching materials is indexed according to the Indiana Academic Standards and Common Core Standards for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and secondary education courses.  We have also added the new College and Career Ready Standards to our database, along with most K-12 content areas (outside of Science, Technology and Math).    Since our launch in 2003, our web-based collection of digital resources has grown to over 4,200 highly interactive materials.  We feature non-text teaching resources (such as simulations, scientific visualizations, virtual labs, collaborative skills builders, process modelers, serious gaming, and access to live data) that mirror the digital tools available in the modern workplace. We also freely offer the Moodle Learning Management System. Child Care & Early Education Research Connections provides a continually updated, free, and easily searchable collection of research on child care and early education for researchers and policymakers. The Homework Hotline started in 1991 as a toll-free telephone service. Several online features have been added in recent years, and the iPhone app gives students easier access to Rose-Hulman students that are available as hotline tutors from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday during the school year. Supported by the Lilly Endowment, Inc., the Homework Hotline provides toll-free math and science tutoring services by calling 1-877-ASK-ROSE (1-877-275-7673) or through the website www.AskRose.org
