On Our Radar

* In-Store Charging Kiosks. From Urban Outfitters to Whole Foods to Under Armour, retailers are turning to phone-charging kiosks as a way to keep shoppers in their stores. Charging stations feature locking compartments to keep phones secure.

Bed Bath & Beyond's Coupon Strategy.

Those ubiquitous 20%-off coupons have raised revenue but also pinched the retailer's profits, as consumers come to expect discounts each time they shop.

Shopping Basket Ideas

An Illinois retailer was looking for shopping basket ideas, other than plastic or wire designs seen everywhere. His peers jumped in with ideas, including this Indiana retailer: "We use a French market basket, which nests to stack and has folding handles. We have a price tag on each one, and we sell some every week. We also watch for full baskets and ask customers if we can give them an empty basket and place theirs with their name at the checkout while they continue to shop." Tip: A Nonprofit For Display Props

Did you know that Habitat for Humanity's ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials and more? Merchandising expert Seanette Corkill of Frontdoor Back (recently interviewed in Giftbeat) says the stores are one of her favorite places to find unique props for displays -- all at great prices!
Pick: Whiskey River Soap

If you're looking to draw in a younger demographic to your shop, check out Whiskey River Soap. Launched earlier this year by designer Tabitha Wilson, creator of several best-selling products for Fred & Friends, the line of soaps and candles features quality fragrances and humorous packaging. The Soap for Writer's Block ("smells like regurgitated ideas and probably a vampire") has been shared more than a million times on social media. This is definitely a company to watch!

Trend: Seen At High Point Market

The High Point Market is a perfect place to spot the latest trends in home decor. Houzz contributor Becky Harris shares her take on the five big trends that created a buzz at last week's market, from chain-link detailing to the integration of fashion and interior design (think Hermes-inspired orange and equestrian details). It's interesting to read the comments, where others chime in with their own High Point observations, from variations of pinks (is mauve coming back?) to island references in textiles and accessories.
