* Malicious SoftwareIf ever there was a case for more complex passwords, this is it! A report provides insight into what retailers are up against, as hackers find ways into computer networks without tripping security systems.

Engage, Engage, Engage! It's not enough to have a social media presence; you also need to engage your customers. Only about 17% of companies respond to customer complaints via social media within one hour; 21% never respond at all. Don't let online complaints define your retail business.

Wish List For Vendors

What do retailers want companies and showrooms to know? Plenty! There's a hot discussion on giftbeat.com, where retailers are commenting on pricing, scanners, ship dates, rep appointments, credit card charges and more. You can find the discussion in our Product/Buying forum. Reminder: Access to Giftbeat's Community Board is a FREE service for subscribers.

Tip: A Repurposed Birdcage

I just returned from Accessories The Show in New York, where jewelry, scarves, bags and more filled the Javits Center. One of my favorite displays was in the Miss Ellie booth, where the creative team used a metal birdcage (and also antique chandeliers) to showcase jewelry. Long S-hooks inserted into holes in the lower section of the cage hold necklaces at different heights. Eye-catching and easy for anyone to do! Pick: Julio Designs' State Jewelry

State-themed product is hot, as the trend gained steam at the summer shows, especially in jewelry and apparel. We love
Julio Designs' cleverly packaged sets,
"What's Your State of Mind," featuring earrings and a state-shaped pendant with a unique phrase or icon stamped on it (Y'all for Texas, Peach for Georgia, etc.). Cost: $22. The company will also customize the sets for a low minimum, making it a great local gift for the upcoming fall/winter season!
Trend: The Downsizing Of Jewelry

While interest in large-scale jewelry continues, we also see some movement toward smaller, daintier pieces. One manufacturer at Accessories The Show called it a "delicate" direction, something she sees especially among the younger generation.
