On Our Radar

While attendance was mixed at the winter markets, optimism was generally high, with some continuing themes and new trends worth watching:
  • Owls maintain
    a strong presence.
  • Fox motifs are incoming, with some citing the influence of the viral sensation "What Does The Fox Say?"
  • Nautical chic is on the rise, as anchors play a prominent role.
  • Scarves remain a key fashion accessory, but retailers ask: How strong will they be in 2014?

Tip: Remember The "Strike Zone"

Are you putting merchandise on the floor or too low? That's a big mistake, according to designer Debi Ward Kennedy. Remember to place most of your merchandise in the "Strike Zone" between the eye level and knees. Another common mistake is filling every single space on a surface. "When you go into a museum, there are spaces around paintings and sculpture -- it is really important to leave space around them when you want people to notice details," says Kennedy. "The eye has nowhere to rest when an area is cluttered and you assault the senses."
Pick: Wings Collection Takes Off

Originating in 2012 as "Women Supporting Women Across the Globe," the Wings Collection from Alexa's Angels has an expanded variety of colorful and unique products, from hand-knitted, fair trade bracelets to "kantha" bags and scarves. The goal of the line is to "give women wings to soar above poverty," says company founder and president Beth Lang.

In India, the word "kantha" means rags. For centuries, poor women have taken their discarded cloths and sewn them together to create something new. Though beautiful, the functional kantha was not intended to be a work of art; instead, it was what these families used to keep warm. Alexa's Angels helps seamstresses in India carry on the tradition with kantha bags and scarves handcrafted from 100% cotton saris. Sugg. retail range: $10-$30.
