Seasonal Flu Resources, and an Innovative Flu Reduction Strategy

With this year's flu season shaping up to be a hard-hitting one, transit providers can be on the front lines of reducing the disease in both drivers and riders. Steve Marshall, Safety and Compliance Officer at Crawford Area Transit Authority (CATA) in Meadville, PA, shared that last year, his organization had a particularly high rate of infection, with "as many as five drivers out sick with it at the same time. In a transit authority of our small size, that's a significant number." Steve and his safety assistant organized a "germ patrol," meeting the buses at layover stops and wiping down the touchable surfaces with disinfectant. Within a week, the staff was flu-free, and some of the customers were likely saved from the virus as well!
