June 2016
Our services begin at 11 a.m. Sundays in the Lodge at Woodlawn School,
just north of Davidson. A nursery for children up to pre-kindergarten age starts at 10:45 a.m. in the classroom adjacent to the Lodge. Children in K-5th grade go to Spiritual Exploration following the children's story during the service.

Upcoming services

June 5: "The Value of Service" with Rev. Amy Brooks
Why our congregations matter as places to learn and grow into a life of service, and what we get out of it along the way. This is also our congregation's anniversary Sunday. Come one and all to reconnect and help us celebrate our seventh year together!
For those interested in talking together about the direction of our Fellowship, please plan to meet after the service from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Rev. Amy will be present. If you need child care, please let us know soon so that we can make arrangements.

June 12: "It's Simple Really" with Rev. Mary Frances Comer
Our monthly theme is "simplicity," and today we consider how simple (or not so simple) it is to honor the Interconnected Web of All Existence.
Rev. May Frances is affiliated community minister at Piedmont UU Church of Charlotte.

June 19: "Our Spiritual Forefathers" with Rev. Amy Brooks
In his book Three Prophets of Religious Liberalism, Conrad Wright talks about three men who shaped early Unitarian Univeralism. In honor of Father's Day, we will look at the lives of these three and their enduring contribution to our movement.

June 26: "Service is My Prayer" with member Marilin Campbell
Marilin will talk about her experiences volunteering in various parts of the country, and England and France, and the warm relationships gained while doing the work.

Greetings members and friends,

At our recent congregational meeting we had an important conversation about our direction moving forward. I want to thank you for your thoughtful questions, and your concern for the nature as well as the susAmy Brookstainability of the Fellowship. I also want to thank you for the concern many of you expressed in support of your staff. It was definitely noted and appreciated.

As I stated, this is a congregational conversation and decision. I want you to know that I am here to support you. I think this congregation has done phenomenal work these many years. I am especially appreciative of the vision and many long hours people have given to create this community. I think you are pretty special.

Every organization has growing pangs. We are naming some of those and trying to figure out how to address them. I appreciate the courage, openness and care we are showing. I invite us to be curious about all the possibilities. And I encourage us to remain engaged in the conversation. Only when our voices are heard can we live out our principles and arrive at the best solution for the common good.

     In gratitude,
     Amy

Did you hear our choir sing "Sioux Prayer" on May 22? If not, you missed some beautiful singing. Here's a big, hearty thank you to all the singers who dedicate hours of their lives to making music. Their hard wTheresa Woodyork paid off on the 22nd. Thank you to Dan Aldridge, Billie Rosene, Barb Haggart, Nicole Gantz, Karen Miller, Jeff Pender and Veronique SingermanYou'll hear more from the choir in June, and then it will take a much-needed hiatus.

Thanks go to our wonderful young singers: Wendy Bower, Zora and Sophie Hermeling, Vivi Lane, Evelyn  Paradise, Oliver Pender, Alma Belcher, and Parker Whitworth.  What a pleasure to work with our younger singers.

Social Action

     Adopt-a-Highway
In 2011, the UU Fellowship of Lake Norman officially joining the Unitarian Universalist Association with 30 members. We met on the first and third Sunday of every month and had a plan for how to grow the Fellowship. But we had to get the word out! Had to advertise. Do you know the cost of an ad in the newspaper? On radio? Our little budget didn't support that.
Then, a few members thought of Adopt-a-Highway. If we cleaned up the trash along about a mile of Davidson-Concord Road in Davidson, the state would put up a sign at either end indicating that we are responsible for keeping that stretch of road clean.
Once each quarter, a group of congregants meets on a Saturday morning and spends a couple of hours cleaning up trash along the side of the road. We get to keep the community clean, serve out our mission by "living our beliefs through works" and get free advertising! Several members have indicated that they found us because of our signs!
The Fellowship needs volunteers in order to keep that public presence. Please sign up to join us on our next scheduled date -- Saturday, June 18 -- by writing  action@uulakenorman.org. Take your turn in sharing your time and talent to keep our adopted highway clean!

     Habitat Women Build
The Our Towns Habitat for Humanity Women Build program has just about finished building a house for a deserving family. Come help put the finishing touches on it with landscaping at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 25. We will be laying sod and planting shrubs around the house. Children are welcome when accompanied by a parent or other adult.  Please sign up to join us by emailing action@uulakenorman.org.

     Save the Date:
Aug. 19-21 will be Charlotte Gay Pride weekend, and UU Lake Norman will be partnering with Piedmont UU to sponsor a booth. Come help us celebrate diversity in the Charlotte area!
