Nov. 1: "Otherwise" with Rev. Amy Brooks
There is a New Orleans tradition of celebrating a funeral with a music and, often, a dance-filled procession. In parts of Latin America, altars with fragrant treats, colorful flowers and sugar candy skulls are erected to honor the dead. What do these celebrations of life have to teach us about how we observe death? This is our annual remembrance service so please bring a photo or keepsake (that you will retrieve at the end of the service) for our altar.
Nov. 8: "Immigration: Beyond Soundbites" with member Ida Keir
Only 3% of the world's population migrates to a different country, but that small group gets a whole lot of attention. What are some of the causes and effects? We'll look at immigration globally and locally.
Ida is an immigration attorney and the daughter of Dutch immigrants.
Nov. 15: "Listening for the Ancestors" with guests Alan Davis and Sam Treadaway
Come join us for a Sunday of music and story as we explore the ways in which the tales of people are woven into music.
Alan and Sam are member musicians of Piedmont UU Church.
Nov. 22: "The Ancestor Way" with Rev. Amy Brooks
As we enter into the season of Thanksgiving, let us consider the cultures, traditions, opportunities and gifts that have been passed on to us and what it means to be "thankful." Most particularly, is it a time to just say "thank you," or is there more to consider?
An all-congregation potluck will follow the service. Contact Dana Overcash for more information.
Nov. 29: "Some Lessons from South Africa" with members Dan Aldridge and Karin Peterson
Dan and Karin will discuss their summer trip to South Africa, which they took with other scholars from Davidson College. They will explore the social transformations of the country into a democracy, the legacies of racism and colonialism, the role of collective memorialization of political struggle in South Africa, and what challenges this has brought to their own thinking about justice and democracy in the U.S. context.
Dan Aldridge is a professor of history at Davidson College; his wife Karin Peterson is a professor of sociology at UNC Asheville.

Greetings Members and Friends,
The fall/winter traditions have already begun (Yom Kippur, mid-Autumn Moon Festival, Samhain). As we move into the holiday season of thanksgiving and gift giving, I think it is an opportunity to reflect upon the traditions we have been given from our families and culture. Are these traditions meaningful? How do they ground us? Which ones are we most interested in passing on to the next generation?
As we prepare to celebrate the things we find important, let us share them with family, friends and within this congregation, for in sharing we lift up what is most precious and create again the beloved community.
I look forward to this special time together.

Music notes
Music and movement for UU Lake Norman children
You might have noticed the children having a great time playing (ad lib) instruments during occasional services on Sundays. On Nov. 8, we'll go a step further and engage the children in some extra-special music and movement, with a rehearsal beforehand. Children ages 4-9 are invited to come to a music class with me a t 10:30 a.m. We will prepare a presentation for the 11 a.m. service that day (think waving flags and walking in time to the beat). Rehearsal is needed for participation. See you at 10:30?
Adult choir: Last call
It's always fun to see new faces and hear new voices participating in the adult choir. Lately we've welcomed Hannah Lukow, Karen Miller, and Barbara Haggart to our choral activities. Some of these ladies will become regulars, to our great pleasure. We're hard at work on Tuesday nights preparing special music for a few key services, and for the the all-music holiday service of Dec. 20. Last call for singers to join us and begin learning the notes of the holiday scores in order to participate in December's musical fun!

Interim Spiritual Exploration teacher
When Linda Williams' health would not let her continue as SE teacher, Megan St. Amand quickly stepped in to help. She is warm and wonderful with the children. Luckily curriculum and materials are already prepared for the next few months. Thank you, Megan! A search committee is being formed to engage a permanent SE teacher. Anyone interested in the position or who knows someone that they would recommend for the position, please email Véronique Singerman.

Retiring!
There are some folks who have long helped UU Lake Norman keep going on Sunday mornings. As they "retire," let us extend to them our most gracious thanks for the countless hours they have offered us. "Thank you!" Amy Hartman for your five years as a Sunday morning set-up volunteer and "thank you!" Jeff and Anne Pender for your near constant presence these last several years as Sunday sound engineers. We wish you well, hope you make it to Adult SE (if you wish) or just get a day off!
In other news, we need another Sunday morning set-up volunteer and a couple of sound savvy techs! Please contact Chris Johnson, or Jeff Pender if you are able to help with either of these volunteer opportunities. Thanks!

Social Action Mark your calendar: Nov. 7: Adopt-a-Highway. Please help in our quarterly trash cleanup of Davidson's Concord Road. All equipment is provided. For details or to volunteer: action@uulakenorman.org.
Nov. 15 and Nov. 22: The Social Action Committee will collect canned goods for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen. Please bring in cans or dry goods that local families can use for their Thanksgiving meal.
Guest at Your Table is an annual fundraising and education program that supports the UU Service Committee's human rights work. We invite everyone to take part throughout the month of November. As you gather with your family and friends at a meal, we ask that you figuratively invite a guest to your table -- someone who doesn't have food on their table or clean running water in their house. Money collected will be donated to the Ada Jenkins Center and the UUSC. Look for a collection box soon!

Book group The book for November is Fields of Blood by Karen Armstrong. She argues in a beautifully written and scholarly narrative that religions have not been the cause of wars over the past, say, 5,000 years. Rather it's economic need and desire for political and territorial gain that are the real culprits. Poor old religion gets roped in as excuse, justification, and motivator of the masses. Oops, we've just spoiled the ending for you! Second Wednesday at 7 pm. For more information, email bookclub@uulakenorman.org.

We have started a Meetup.com page, and invite all of you to join! This is a great opportunity to advertise ourselves, and the more members we have listed, the better! Go to www.meetup.com/UU-Fellowship-of-Lake-Norman to see our page, and sign up! Please see Nicole Gantz if you have any questions.

Christmas in Davidson
Come join us at Christmas in Davidson on Dec. 3-5. We will be selling baked goodies and donated books, and giving out brochures about UU-ism and our Fellowship. If you have books to donate or can bake cookies or other delicious stuff, or you'd like to help out at the booth -- 6-9 p.m. on any of the three evenings -- please contact Ted Worthington at tedworthington@hotmail.com. It's a great way to become better known in the community as we launch the holiday season's festivities.
