Upcoming services
Oct. 4: "A Blessing of the Animals"with Rev. Amy Brooks
We are in profound relationships with the beautiful creatures with which we share this planet. Their existence balances our ecosystem, their beauty and diversity evoke awe. For labor, food and companionship these animals bless our lives. This morning we gather to bless the animals. Bring your pet in a picture, a cage or on a leash (if exceedingly well-behaved) or a photo of an animal you feel akin to in some way. (Note: We are not allowed to bring animals into the Lodge, but are working toward moving the service outside or otherwise accomodating those who bring their pets.)
Please join the Social Action Committee for a special meeting following the service. See Announcements below.
Oct. 11: "The Rage Machine," Rev. Robin Tanner, guest speaker
In our spiritual lives, how do we discern the difference between the anger against injustice and the destructive rage and resentment that eats at our lives? Should we let everything go?
Rev. Tanner is lead minister at Piedmont UU Church in Charlotte.
Oct. 18: "Where's my Woolly Mammoth Tooth?" with Rev. Mary Frances Comer, guest speaker
Life can get cluttered when we cling to too many possessions -- or habits or stories that hinder us. How do we clear the physical space? How do we let go of behaviors or inner dialogue that clutters the mind? Rev. Forrest Church said: "We must first let go of the things that will not save us. Then we must reach out for the things that can." Rev. Comer is affiliated community minister at Piedmont UU Church in Charlotte.
Oct. 25: "As We Age" with Rev. Amy Brooks Aging is a process that can be one of graceful letting go or full of clinging and regret. At times it may be some of both, but let go we must. How do we approach these important life lessons, and can our faith community support us in this process?

The next Coffee and Conversation will be on Oct. 11 for those interested in finding out more about our faith and our Fellowship. It's a fun and informative round table discussion. It will be in Classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m. Childcare will be available if requested beforehand. Please write membership@uulakenorman.org if you plan to attend.

Greetings Members and Friends,
It's October and change is in the air! Coincidentally, I am excited by all the new things our congregation is trying. Our Children's Spiritual Exploration program has a new teacher and we have embarked on a partnership with the Piedmont UU congregation. Next, we have begun our Welcoming Congregation process in which we will study, learn and grow to become even more attuned to the rea lities of our LGBTQ communities and friends. Finally, we are still putting together our team to address issues related to "Building Our Brand." If you are interested, please contact our board vice president, Nicole Gantz.
The biggest change for me is developing closer ties with the Piedmont staff around worship. We are trying to support each other more fully in worship planning, and also through sharing pulpits. Thus, over the next several months you will be seeing some of Piedmont's Rev. Robin Tanner and Rev. Justin Martin and I will be speaking in one of their two locations, at either the University or Salisbury site. Rev. Mary Frances Comer, whom you already know and is Piedmont's community minister, will also be appearing more often.
These are a few highlights from my singular perspective, but if you look around, there are plenty of other activities available. To the leaders who continuously tend these programs, I give my heartfelt thanks!
Now is a great time to try something new. Welcome fall! Welcome change!
For more information or to get involved please see volunteer coordinator Marilyn Campbell or: Dana Overcash, Fellowship Committee; Amy Hartman, Social Action; Marjorie Flowers, Membership; Karin Peterson and Jeff Pender, Welcoming Congregation; Nicole Gantz, Building Our Brand; and Marilyn Campbell, Worship.

Music notes
All Sing Choir
Our faithful singers of the adult choir have been rehearsing each Tuesday night. Meanwhile, we extend a special invitation to others who may like to sing: Come Tuesday, Oct. 13, to an All Sing Choir rehearsal and learn the music we'll present the following Sunday. This is a great way to try out the choir and have some mu sical fun without making a major commitment. You would commit to two rehearsals: Oct. 13 and a warm-up rehearsal before the service on Oct. 18. So start warming up your voice in the shower, and if you need directions, shoot an email to me.
Thanks to all the musicians
A big thank you to all the people who have contributed music so far this season, including: Instrumentalists Eddie Gunn (harmonica), Ian Davis (percussion), John Boles (cello), Hannah Lukow (cello) and her friend Riley (piano), Kamel Bouchoucha (percussion), and guitarist Ken Powers. Also, Evelyn Paradise, Oliver Pender, and Wendy Bowers, who made it rain inside the lodge!
And, singers Veronique Singerman, Laurie Walker, Nicole Gantz, Kim Worthington, Dan Aldrich, and Jeff Pender. Our services are richer thanks to your talents and dedication!
Children's music
Stay tuned for information on children's music classes, to be held soon. We're working out the details. Meanwhile, see me or email me if you and your child are interested.
