Our services begin at 11 a.m. Sundays in the Lodge at Woodlawn School,
just north of Davidson. A nursery for children up to pre-kindergarten age starts at 10:45 a.m. in the classroom adjacent to the Lodge. Children in K-5th grade go to Spiritual Exploration following the children's story during the service.

Upcoming services
Sept. 6: "The American Dream" with Rev. Amy Brooks
"When people are ... given an opportunity, they rise to the occasion to make their dreams reality" (from Wakami). It's Labor Day weekend! Join us to consider the issues of labor, its value, who works, and under what conditions, particularly as this relates to our neighbors to the South.
Sept. 13: "Embracing our Whole Story" with guest Andrew McKnight
We are indeed the sum of many parts; not all of them are so attractive to us. Yet as Andrew often jests self-deprecatingly in concert, "if we don't have a laugh at ourselves every now and then we're missing a mighty big source of humor!" During this program Andrew weaves humorous and poignant moments together in a beautiful tapestry, helping to appreciate our perceived faults as gifts as well as our talents.
Since permanently leaving his corporate environmental engineering career in 1996, award-winning folk and Americana artist Andrew McKnight's musical journey has traced nearly a million miles of blue highways, and earned him a wealth of critical acclaim and enthusiastic fans for his captivating performances and seven recordings.
Andrew will perform at a house concert and potluck on Sept. 12 -- see Announcements below.
Sept. 20: "RSVP" with Rev. Amy Brooks
In a return to theme-based preaching, "invitation" is the theme for September. What or who is inviting you at this moment in your life? Are you being called inward or outward? How do we decide when to say yes or no, or are we just too busy to respond? The invitation to a deeper connection in community and life is deeply spiritual and needs attention and space -- so join us for the morning and give yourself that gift.
Sept. 27: "The Case Against Hell" with member Chris Johnson
A brief history of the Universalist side of UU and a logical argument against the possibility of hell.
A special meeting of the congregation will follow the service. Details below.

The next Coffee and Conversation will be on Oct. 11 for those interested in finding out more about our faith and our Fellowship. It's a fun and informative round table discussion. It will be in Classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m. Childcare will be available if requested beforehand. Please write membership@uulakenorman.org if you plan to attend.

Dear Members and Friends,
Last month I wrote about the importance of attending to the spiritual lives of our children. So many of you responded -- thank you! We had 15 adults train to support our elementary classroom this year. In addition, we are thrilled to welcome Linda Williams as our elementary children's Spiritual Exploration teacher. It feels really good to have this aspect of our strategic growth plan on more solid footing.
So, what's next? Is it the Welcoming Congregation Task Force? Spiritual care of long-time members? Refocusing and recharging our Social Action Committee (which did an awesome job at Gay Pride)? Building our brand? These are some of the areas we plan to attend to in the year ahead, so please talk to a member of our board or the Strategic Planning co-chairs, Marge Flowers and Jeff Pender, if you want to participate.
No matter your interest, I encourage all of us to remember that Sept. 20 is our first ever "Bring a Friend Sunday." It will be followed by a potluck lunch. It is a great way to let people know who (and where) we are. It's also an opportunity for our friends to learn more about us, and deepen our friendships. Please RSVP about what dish you plan to bring to Dana Overcash at dowest529@yahoo.com. I hope to see you then and meet your friends!

Sunday morning groups
The Humanism Discussion Group will discuss selected chapters of Damned Good Company by Luis Granados throughout September. From an overview by the American Humanist Association: "Damned Good Company is a book about people, not about God. People who have preached about God, taken money for sharing what they say they know about God, and ordered others about to enforce what they claim to be God's will -- and a small band of heroes who stood up to them." Reading the book is encouraged but not required. We welcome all those interested in discussing life from a humanist perspective! The group meets in classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m.
The Adult Discussion Group meets to explore and share what inspires us and the challenges life brings. It meets at 9:45 a.m. in classroom #3 and all are welcome. Youth Spiritual Exploration (grades 5 and up): Youth are welcome to stay for the service or leave with the children for a separate break-out discussion.

Special meeting of the congregation
At a special meeting of the congregation, called for Sept. 27 just after the Sunday service, we will consider a proposal to establish a building fund. The purpose of the fund is to receive and invest gifts so that the Fellowship will have the necessary resources when it is ready to lease or purchase or build a more permanent home. The fund is designed along the lines of an endowment fund. It would be managed by an elected three-member committee. Members are urged to review the enabling resolutions that they were sent via email, along with the accompanying information. Please ask the Board questions ahead of the special meeting or bring your questions on Sept. 27.

Music notes
Youth tour of WDAV
On Aug. 23, several UU Lake Norman youth, friends, and parents went with me to tour the facilities of the classical radio station, WDAV. On-air host Myelita Melton led the tour and broadcast her announcement breaks from the control room while the group of nine UU tourists watched through soundproof glass. All nine crowded into a production/edit suite, where I recorded the first paragraph
(called the "billboard," in radio jargon) of my next "Choral Showcase" show that aired the following Saturday. Nobody made a noise while I was on mic! Thanks to Ted Worthington for the idea of the tour. Choir resumes Calling all adult singers! Our choir will again be rehearsing on Tuesday evenings at 7:30, preparing music for our services this fall and winter. Yes, we're already practicing for the all-music holiday service in December. Children's music At UU Lake Norman, we like to involve the children during our services. Sometimes we invite any and all children up to the front to ad lib and play on an instrument, without rehearsal. A merry band often accompanies our opening song! At other times, we hold a structured music class before the service, as we did on Sunday, Aug. 30. This is an opportunity to work on musical skills such as singing or playing in a group, listening to the other players, starting and stopping together, learning to play different instruments, and following a director's cues. When we present during the service what we've learned during the class, we have a polished piece with a beginning, middle, and end. Look for announcements in the Order of Service and online when we plan to hold classes in the future. And please see me if you would like your child to attend.

Membership
We had 12 visitors to our Fellowship in August.
At the Charlotte Pride festival and parade, we handed out 450 bookmarks, 300-plus brochures and over 400 beads tagged with our web page. And we talked to a whole lot of people. Jen Bower, who spearheaded our participation in the weekend event, is already starting to plan for next year's event!
Book group We meet Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. to discuss The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. It's set in Charleston. It's based on real people -- and their diaries. And it traces the parallel lives of Hetty (a slave girl) who is given as a serving maid to Sarah as an 11th birthday gift. Fascinating and beautifully written. For more information, email: bookclub@uulakenorman.org. Women's Centering Group The group has resumed meeting on Fridays at 8 a.m. at Community Yoga in Cornelius.
