Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lake Norman

An inclusive community embracing individual spiritual growth
-- living our beliefs through works

Daylilly
August 2015
Our services begin at 11 a.m. Sundays in the Lodge at Woodlawn School,
just north of Davidson. A nursery for children up to pre-kindergarten age starts at 10:45 a.m. in the classroom adjacent to the Lodge. Children in K-5th grade go to Spiritual Exploration following the children's story during the service.

Upcoming services

Aug. 2: "Rainbow Sunday" with the Social Action Committee
Members share some of their different experiences with the LGBTQ community and why learning about this community, and welcoming 'them' as a part of 'us' is a great way to live out our value of diversity.

Aug. 9: "Finding like-minded people on the other side of the aisle" with Amy Hartman
UUs take comfort in being around like-minded people. But if we surround ourselves only with people who have similar views, we also limit our opportunities for personal growth.
Amy Hartman is a former president of UU Lake Norman.

Aug. 16: "How to Talk UU, or What's Your Elevator Speech?" with Rev. Amy Brooks
In a religiously pluralist world and in a tradition that embraces religious truth from many places (the world's religions to personal experience), telling people what UUs believe is a challenge. Thus the idea of the elevator speech was suggested. Can you describe Unitarian Universalism in the time it takes to ride the elevator to say, the 20th floor? Join us as we have some fun learning how to talk succinctly about Unitarian Universalism to our families, friends, neighbors and coworkers. And why does it matter anyway?

Aug. 23: "Come to GA with me!" with Marilyn Campbell
Member Marilyn Campbell, who chairs the Worship Committee, shares her experiences at the UUA General Assembly in Portland, Ore., in June.
After the service, member Amy Hartman will report on her two recent trips to Guatemala. See Social Action below.

Aug. 30: "Life-giving Waters" with Rev. Amy Brooks
"Let justice roll down like water and peace like an ever flowing stream." So go the words of a favorite UU hymn. Our annual water service celebrates the role of water in our lives. Think about how water has touched your life this year, literally, or, what water means to you metaphorically. We will gather at the end of a long, hot, dry summer to celebrate water. You are welcome to bring some from a favorite place, but we will provide water so all may participate.

The next Coffee and Conversation will be on Aug. 9 for those interested in finding out more about our faith and our Fellowship. It's a fun and informative roundtable discussion. It will be in Classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m. Childcare will be available if requested beforehand. Please write membership@uulakenorman.org if you plan to attend.

Greetings good people,

It is my sincere hope that many, if not all of you, share my deep concern for the spiritual growth of our children. Their experiences with us will help shape who they become, especially when it comes to the values and beliefs we hold most dear. Therefore I invite all of us to give some thoAmy Brooksught to becoming an adult volunteer a few times a year in our Children's Spiritual Exploration Program.

I know, I know! Lots of us have raised our children, and others of us raising children are tired on Sunday morning and need a break. That's why we are in the process of hiring a teacher AND partnering this year with the Piedmont UU Church to address Children's Spiritual Exploration.

This partnership gives us some professional leadership with Rev. Justin Martin, who is a UU minister and has expertise in religious education. He will be leading a joint volunteer training on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 9:45 a.m. to12:15 p.m. at Piedmont UU. All adult volunteers are encouraged to attend. Your part will be to support the teacher we hire, but the training will help us all understand the curriculum and support each other.

Just a few times a year -- that's it. But we need YOU (8 of you for once every other month; 12 for a quarterly rotation; 16 for just three times a year!). The more the merrier! Join us! To express your interest, contact Veronique Singerman at president@uulakenorman.org.

    See you there!

    Yours in faith and service,
    Amy

Sunday morning groups

The Humanism Discussion Group will continue its discussion of UU principles in August, followed by other topics. No preparation is required -- just be ready for lively and stimulating conversation. The group meets in classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m.

The Adult Discussion Group meets to explore and share what inspires us and the challenges life brings. It meets at 9:45 a.m. in classroom #3 and all are welcome.

Youth Spiritual Exploration (grades 5 and up): Youth are welcome to stay for the service or leave with the children for a separate break-out discussion.

Board retreat highlights

The Board agreed to start implementing three aspects of the recently proposed Strategic Plan:

    1. Building our brand as a liberal, inclusive congregation that stands on the side of social justice. If thinking, planning and doing the work of brand building sound like your cup of tea, please contact Nicole Gantz.
    2. Strengthening our children's Spiritual Exploration program. Rev. Amy's message, above, describes the benefits and volunteer needs of our new partnership with the Piedmont UU Church.
    3. Launching the process for becoming a Welcoming Congregation. Aren't we already welcoming and inclusive? Yes! But this is a process of learning the cultures, the language, and the issues of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, and then deciding as a congregation to welcome individuals -- and now couples -- in those communities into the life of the Fellowship. It's a step toward achieving the diversity that we so often talk about. Rev. Amy welcomes your interest in this project.

     Other decisions and updates:

Nicole Gantz was approved (per recent amendment of our bylaws) as our vice-president.
Marilyn Campbell is the new chair of the Worship Committee. Please contact her if you'd like to be part of creating our beautiful Sundays.
Board meetings will be on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The next meeting is Aug.10.  We are grateful to WDAV at Davidson College for meeting space at 423 N. Main Street. There is plenty of room for any members who wish to attend.

    Youth field trip

On Sunday, Aug. 23, UU Lake Norman youth will tour the facility of WDAV, the classical public radio station of Davidson College. As a part-time announcer and host of "Choral Showcase" on WDAV, Theresa WoodyI will lead the tour right after our service on that Sunday. Please contact me if interested; we'll line up transportation.

    Welcome, Ian Davis

Welcome percussionist Ian Davis to the musical life of our fellowship. Ian has much experience playing many styles of music, including avant garde jazz! He has many coveted instruments in his personal collection and is a real asset to our music.

     House Band

Bass, check. Drums, check. Now we need guitars...  Contact me if you can play a riff or two, (or even a few chords) and would like to help our house band on occasion.

     UU Lake Norman Strings

Band, check. Strings ... checking! We already have adult cellists in John Boles and Hannah Lukow.  Now, several youth are coming together to form a string ensemble, too. Will it be a trio? A quartet? We'll begin to make it happen on Aug. 16 and 23.  Interested?
