Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lake Norman

An inclusive community embracing individual spiritual growth
-- living our beliefs through works

February 2015
Our services begin at 11 a.m. Sundays in the Lodge at Woodlawn School,
just north of Davidson. A nursery for children up to pre-kindergarten age starts at 10:45 a.m. in the classroom adjacent to the Lodge. Children in K-5th grade go to Spiritual Exploration following the children's story during the service.

Upcoming services

Feb. 1: "The Way of Doubt" with Rev. Amy Brooks
Doubts: Those niggling "what ifs" that pepper our lives. Doubt, it turns out, has a long, illustrious history. Much of this history is intertwined with faith. Join us as we explore the way doubt has contributed to and shaped our own UU tradition.

    Feb. 8:
"Darwin Day -- An Evolving Tradition"

In conjunction with International Darwin Day -- officially celebrated on the anniversary of Charles Darwin's birthday (Feb. 12) -- the Humanist Discussion Group will lead the morning's service in an inspirational reflection on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking and hunger for truth as embodied by Charles Darwin.

Feb. 15: "In Celebration of Love" with Rev. Amy Brooks
In a world full of different ideas, beliefs and choices what unites us? Love, that powerful human experience that so deeply touches our lives --  from personal relationships to social movements -- can bring us together. Let's celebrate!

     Feb. 22:  All music!
This  service will feature musicians from within the Fellowship, a visit by the Davidson College ensemble Melodemics and engaging UU hymns. See music director Theresa Woody's Music Notes below for details.

Milestones

Our sympathy goes to Valena and Bobby McMurry in the passing of Bobby's father, Robert Miller McMurry, on Jan. 17 in Shelby.

Congratulations to Eddie and Naomi Gunn on the birth of their great-granddaughter, Haven, on Jan.16, and best wishes to new parents Desaree and Austin, who often visit the Fellowship.

We offer our care and sympathy to Nancy Embry and family on the sad occasion of the death of her brother-in-law. We also extend our congratulations to Nancy at the birth of her (third) grandson, Samuel.

Please send brief items sharing news of births, deaths and other significant milestones to newsletter@uulakenorman.org.

Greetings Members and Friends,

No sooner does the new year begin than I receive solicitations from the dozens of nonprofit organizations I support or wish I could support. How do I decide? Here are some of the criteria I consider:
Amy Brooks    Am I passionate about the mission?
Does it build for the future?
    Does it promote social change?
    Does it create relationships?

When it comes to UU Lake Norman, I can easily answer "yes" to all of these questions. Furthermore, I can list a whole bunch of things my family and I receive from this congregation: kindness, support and love; the freedom to explore and to grow spiritually; a way to serve the greater good. To me these are immeasurable.

As our canvass committee prepares to ask each of us what we can give this year, I hope you will take the time to think about what matters to you about our Fellowship, what you receive from the people here, and what we are building for the future.

I am grateful for what we offer and what we are becoming.

    Yours in faith and service,

    Amy

The Humanist Discussion Group will discuss current event topics over the month of February. All are welcome, and no preparation is required. The group meets in classroom #2 at 9:45 a.m. Upcoming topics:

Feb. 15: No class, but feel free to join the Coffee and Conversation meeting.

The Adult Discussion Group meets to explore and share what inspires us and the challenges life brings. It meets at 9:45 a.m. in classroom #3 and all are welcome.

Youth Spiritual Exploration (grades 5 and up): Youth are welcome to stay for the service or leave with the children for a separate break-out discussion.

Music notes

     All music on Feb. 22
The service will feature musicians and more musicians, providing an hour of music and readings on world peace and community. We'll hear our resident UU Lake Norman band in some contemporary/pop songs, including the historic "Black and White" by Earl Robinson, whose rendition by Three Dog Night made the charts in the 1970's right after Brown v. Board of Education. And we're excited to announce a visit by Melodemics, an ensemble of Davidson College students including our own Hannah Lukow who play world music. Expect classical cello, world music, pop songs, and, of course, engaging UU hymns you yourself will sing with the others in our community.

    All-Sing Night in February
Have you been tempted to sing in the choir but unable to commit to rehearsals every Tuesday night? Announcing...  (drum-roll)... All-Sing practice on Tuesday, Feb. 17.  Whoever comes, sings the next Sunday. This means committing to two rehearsals: that night (Feb. 17), and another, short rehearsal, before the Feb. 22 service (time TBA). The music will be fun and easy enough to learn in two practices. Come! Let's hear what happens.

"Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." -- Confucius  (Thanks to George Guzynski for this quote)

Membership

Been visiting for a while? Thinking about joining our Fellowship? Good!

If you have visited at least four or five Sundays and attended one or more Coffee and Conversations, you know a good bit about us. If you have attended some of the "Long, Strange Road" CD and discussion evenings, you already know something about our faith. You may want to visit beliefnet.com and check out the Belief-O-Matic quiz! It's fun and a great way to see how compatible your values and beliefs are with those of many UUs.

Becoming a voting member of the Fellowship, or even a Friend, is a great joy and a considerable responsibility. Your voice and vote will count as we move forward. Your contributions of money or service, or both, will have an immediate effect on how we grow and continue to become the community we want to have. Think you might be ready?  Great! Contact Rev. Amy Brooks or Membership Chair Marge Flowers (membership@uulakenorman.org) and talk it over. They're waiting to hear from you. We all are.

Social Action

     Feb. 9 and March 13:
Room in the Inn.
Once again we will be participating in Room in the Inn at Davidson United Methodist Church. This is an opportunity to provide food and shelter for homeless people in the Charlotte area during the winter months. UU Lake Norman will provide the food and DUMC the shelter. Thanks to all who signed up for Feb. 9. We will be announcing signups for March in the coming weeks.

    Guatemala Service Trip

UU Lake Norman is partnering with Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church to support a service trip to Guatemala from June 27 to July 5 this year. In collaboration with Mayan Families, participants will be involved in a project supporting a community in the Lake Atitlan region. Mayan Families is a nonprofit organization that promotes the health and well-being of indigenous communities facing extreme poverty in Guatemala, through education and community development programs.

We encourage you to attend our informational meeting to learn more about this exciting trip, or reach out to Amy Hartman for more information. The meeting will be held April 16, 7-9 p.m., at Piedmont UU, 9704 Mallard Creek Rd. in Charlotte.

In conjunction with this trip, the Social Action committee will be raising money to purchase water filters for the schools or local community around Chuk Muk, Guatemala. These water filters will provide a local school or family with hundreds of gallons of clean water. Each filter costs $121, including a wooden stand built by youth in the Mayan Families woodworking class.

    Water is a Human Right
"Water is essential to human life. Yet, three quarters of a billion people around the world lack clean drinking water. The United Nations has reported that more people now die from contaminated water than from all forms of violence. The human right to water -- access to safe, sufficient and affordable water for everyone -- is more important than ever." -- Unitarian Universalist Service Committee

Water as a human right will be a main focus for UU Lake Norman in 2015. We will start by raising funds for water filters for families in Guatemala (see above). Our Social Action Sunday in March will highlight some of the issues around water. Later in the year, we'll participate in a local clean water project. Stay tuned for more information about how you can get involved.

Announcements

Our film series on the history of UU principles continues on Thursday, Jan. 29 and in February. Join us as we continue the journey of Unitarianism and Universalism in the United States. It is a great introduction for newcomers and will deepen and refresh the knowledge of longtime UUs. Rev. Amy will facilitate a discussion for each segment of the series.

Meetings are on 7-9 p.m. Thursday evenings at Aquesta Bank (9906 Knockando Lane in Huntersville). Jan. 29: "Universalism;" Feb. 12 "Evolution;" Feb. 26 "Unitarian Universalism." Please contact Margie Flowers at membership@uulakenorman.org if you are interested.

The Book Group will meet Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. This month's book is Still Life With Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen. It's an exploration in novel form of how we make -- or drift into, or are forced into -- life changes. For more information, write bookgroup@uulakenorman.org.

Women of UU Lake Norman, center your mind, body and spirit! The Women's
Centering Group meets on Fridays from 8 to 9 a.m. No preparation is necessary. For more information, please contact Laurie Walker at laurie1059@gmail.com.
